Oliver James is fine. But don't like any of the others.

DottyboutDots · 26/10/2013 11:14

Paisley or Heath. Please god, do not add Mae. Imagine a 40 yesr old saying it.

Would it be rude to suggest a herb name like Sage?

TheNunsOfGavarone · 26/10/2013 11:17

Oliver James is a meeja psychologist. Nice name though.

Paisley is a shawl and a town near Glasgow.

DontmindifIdo · 26/10/2013 11:24

Harlow - nope, not a nice place to be named after and does sound too close to Harlot.

Paisley - nice actually

Saylor - she'll spend her life explaining to call centres they've spelt her name wrong, it's not Sailor.

Rose - perfectly servicable middle name, not very exciting though

Mae - prefer May. Mae just looks a bit harsh (can't explain that, it could be the people who use it)

Lexi - a bit "80s soap star" on it's own, fine as a nickname for Alexandra

Mackensie - hate surnames as first names for girls, don't really like it for boys, but more acceptable. Still not nice.

Lux - soap

Emerson - surname problem again

Sienna - nice!

Amerli - not sure about this either.

Boys:
Heath - lovely, and quite strong name.

Landon - sounds like a cockney saying London. Just no.

Oliver - lovely, although very popular in UK.

James - also lovely

Fletcher, Hudson - surnames.

Rory - lovely

Finn - like, but not as nice as Heath, Oliver, James or Rory

Jonah - can sound harsh in some accents, but a nice name

Alfie - fine for a little boy, sounds rough for an adult man. Give him a full name with Alfie as a nickname.

funnyflowersky · 26/10/2013 13:38

Lux is a soap and also reminds me of Lux Interior from The Cramps (guy). It would seem a strange name for a girl.

Fletcher or Finn from your boys names.

Rhubarbgarden · 26/10/2013 14:37

Sienna is nice. I don't like the others.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/10/2013 17:44

Oh FGS, when did you last see Lux soap around unless you are a granny? People are so rude.

Lux is a perfectly fine girls name - I personally know 2 girls with that name in the UK. It means light.

Siena is lovely and Jonah is my favourite from your boys list.

Don't get the snobbery around 'surname names' - Oliver and James are also surnames. Same for place names - I presume no-one objects to Florence on those grounds?

usualsuspect · 26/10/2013 18:05

Didn't you just know that most mnetters would like Oliva James the best Grin

usualsuspect · 26/10/2013 18:06

Oliver*

Sunnysummer · 26/10/2013 18:51

Of your second girls list I like Lux and Sienna lots! Harlow least because its not a nice town here at all Smile

Your boys list is all great, especially Jonah - strong and unusual but still recognisable.

WLondonNanny · 26/10/2013 18:56

Oliver James is my top boys name!! Have loved it for years!

UriGHOULer · 26/10/2013 19:49

I really like Lux and I really like Fletcher, they both sound great said with an Aussie accent.

scarevola · 26/10/2013 19:55

Lux is a global brand, and is still on sale including in UK and Australia. Being a granny isn't a requirement to read what is on the shelves right now.

scarevola · 26/10/2013 19:56

Though the biggest snag with Lux is what it will be rhymed with in a typical playground.

Onesleeptillwembley · 26/10/2013 19:59

Lux does not mean light. It is a measurement of light. That's like saying punnet means strawberry.

scarevola · 26/10/2013 20:01

Lux is Latin for light, so does mean that in translation. And I'd course is the root for words such as lucid and elucidation.

TheFuckersonInquiry · 26/10/2013 21:26

Lux (pronounced 'looth') means light in Spanish. I had a Mexican friend called Lux. I always though it was a common name in Mexico.

funnyflowersky · 26/10/2013 21:58

Luz is Spanish for light, not Lux.

TheFuckersonInquiry · 26/10/2013 22:05

Blush. Doh! Of course it is.

...and I haven't even had a drink.

How do you pronounce Lux then?

funnyflowersky · 27/10/2013 00:05

I think Lux would be pronounced like Lux Interior, also like the soap. Is there another way?

Thumbfuckerwitch · 27/10/2013 05:52

Lux is indeed still on sale here in Australia; Lux soap flakes I've definitely seen, not sure about the bar soap (I don't buy bar soap). As far as I know it's pronounced "Lucks", haven't heard it any other way! Rhymes with sucks etc.

feelingvunerable · 27/10/2013 10:05

I like Oliver James and Saylor is really growing on me.

happy2help · 27/10/2013 10:33

I love Heath, but all the others sound like you're trying a little too hard to be original, and off the wall, IMHO except Finn, Alfie, James and Oliver.
I only like James and Heath.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 27/10/2013 11:12

Paisley is ok but I read it as parsley
Sayla etc I don't like
Heath is nice but Heath Landon is too similar to Heath ledger
Landon is ok but is like a very Essex person pronouncing London
Oliver is nice
James is lovely

JazzAnnNonMouse · 27/10/2013 11:15

Sienna is lovely
As are all the other boys names bar fletcher
