We need a name that is somehow related to Elisabeth.

What do you think?

Bethan or Betsan?

I think Bethan is more popular but then not living in Wales is Betsan too welsh? but then it doesnt have a weird sound or anything

fair enough zing probably should have made it clear in OP.

Bethany not being Welsh means it is a no for DP so we arent even considering other names related to Elisabeth (which actually Bethany isnt anyway)

I love Bethan and was always v jealous my sister got it instead of me! Envy

DalekInAFestiveJumper · 05/10/2013 10:45

Bethan is lovely, IMO.

BurberryQ · 05/10/2013 12:02

Betsi sounds sweet....

you know I was kidding though, right?Wink

It is so difficult to choose names! would you both be happy with a different Welsh name and Elizabeth as a middle name?

flaquark · 05/10/2013 15:04

yeah zing I know Smile

No cant do that unfortunatly- If it's a girl he gets the fn and I get mn and vice versa if a boy. And the Welsh name is DP as is the name related to Elisabeth (his grandmother was Elisabeth called Liesel) so our options are basically Betsan or Bethan, no other names fits

I love Betsan and I know a small one. (disclaimer am Welsh and live in Welsh speaking area). Beti is pretty too.

nicename · 05/10/2013 15:36

I haven't heard of either. Bethan is a softer sound (assuming the other is pronounced Bet-san).

Bethany is nice.

Iamsanta · 05/10/2013 21:13

I wouldn't go for Betsan if your not living in Wales...

Bethan
Begw
Elisa
Betsi...again maybe too welsh.

Jins · 05/10/2013 21:20

I love the name Betsan. Not as keen on Bethan and the English never pronounce it properly anyway Grin

I know two Betsans. Both from welsh speaking families. Is your DH welsh speaking?

BestIsWest · 05/10/2013 21:34

I love Betsan. Bethan is very popular here.

flaquark · 06/10/2013 14:37

jins
Um yes and no. Not with his family at home but he went to Welsh language schools so is fluent and speaks it with friends back home and things

hmmm Betsi but is it okay for a full name?

Betsan reminds me of Catsan, the cat litter I used to buy when I lived abroad.

TidyDancer · 06/10/2013 15:55

How would you pronounce Betsan? Sorry to say it, but it looks ugly and the way I want to say it sounds clunky to me.

NoComet · 06/10/2013 16:12

I was brought up in Wales, but have never heard Betsan, it just looks like a spelling mistake.

Bethan is lovely, several at my Welsh school and one at DDs English one.

NoComet · 06/10/2013 16:16

Disclaimer, I was brought up in 0.00167% Welsh speaking area (2/1200 at my secondary school could speak Welsh and one of those was the Welsh teachers DD and she point blank refused to.)

picnicbasketcase · 06/10/2013 16:32

My immediate thoughts:
Bethan - lovely
Betsan - company manufacturing sanitary bins for public loos.

Sorry Blush

BestIsWest · 06/10/2013 16:56

A famous Betsan. In Wales anyway. She used to be Political Editor for BBC Wales.

TidyDancer · 06/10/2013 17:07

Betsan sounds like a gambling tampon....according to my DP....

DharmaBumpkin · 06/10/2013 18:19

I am in Wales, know two small Betsans, it has really grown on me... (Beti Bach is a lovely nickname).

Bethan is probably more of a familiar sound to non-Welsh people though.

hellymelly · 06/10/2013 23:09

I think Elsbeth might be a Welsh name, there were a couple in my school anyway.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/10/2013 23:16

My mum went to school Betsan Powys Best, apparently she wasn't exactly pleasant.

Chocolatehunter · 06/10/2013 23:26

I'm from Wales, a few of the loveliest people I know are called Bethan. As adults one prefers to be called Beth, the other is always known as Bee.

For Welsh girls names, my favourite is Alys

DigOfTheStump · 07/10/2013 01:11

I have a Beth. Which I love, clearly.

Cezella · 07/10/2013 01:36

I love Betsi- know a couple (am in the very welsh part of North Wales) and it's great as a stand alone name in my opinion (don't Denise Van Outen and Lee Mead have a Betsy? It's no different)

Also prefer Betsan over Bethan, but Betsi wins by miles!
