My friend is pronouncing it 'Char-lot' and I think it's more 'Shar-lut.'

Shar-lot

Layl77 · 01/10/2013 10:41

...or lut

stinkingbishop · 01/10/2013 10:42

SHARlut, defo. MIL says sharLOTT. Drives me mad!

elcranko · 01/10/2013 11:01

Shar-lut here too.

acrabadabra · 01/10/2013 11:10

My auntie was CHAR-lotte which I never questioned growing up.

As an adult in the big, bad world I struggled to keep calling her that as SHAR-lotte would seem the norm.

Doesn't matter though. Lots of people pronounce the same words differently. Makes the world more interesting.

peanutMD · 01/10/2013 11:12

Sharlit but that is my Glaswiegan accent to be fair.

Inclusionist · 01/10/2013 11:20

Shar-LOT makes me think of the Lady of Shalott.

I definitely think the emphasis should be so much on the first syllable that you shouldn't hear the second as much- CHAR..lt

squoosh · 01/10/2013 11:25

SHAR-lut.

ElizabethBathory · 01/10/2013 12:02

lut or lot are both fine, but emphasis has to be on the SHAR.

BlackMogul · 01/10/2013 12:50

I have never heard anyone say Shar lut! Every Chatlotte I know is Shar lot! I think this is because it is an 'o' in the name not a 'u' . Nickname is Lottie not Luttie.

SoupDragon · 01/10/2013 12:52

Shar-lut.

squoosh · 01/10/2013 12:54

Thanks for that lesson on how to spell Charlotte, ever so helpful.

I've never heard it pronounced as Shar-lot. I think a lot of it depends on your accent and how you interpret the lotte sound.

Inclusionist · 01/10/2013 12:56

Is the child yours or your friend's? I guess if it is your DD she is called Char-lut and if she's your friend's she's called Char-lot!!

sherbetpips · 01/10/2013 13:00

Shar Lut

Tattiesthroughthebree · 01/10/2013 13:17

Depends on accent. I pronounce it as in the rhyme

"This is the grave of Elizabeth Charlotte
Born a virgin, died a harlot
She was still a virgin at seventeen
A remarkable thing in Aberdeen"

MerryMarigold · 01/10/2013 13:19

Sharl-uh-t

The 'uh' being like "a" ball, "a" girl, "a" person

Tavv · 01/10/2013 14:56

SHAR-lut

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 01/10/2013 15:01

Shar lot.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/10/2013 15:03

Shar-lut, equal emphasis on both syllables.

nightcircus · 01/10/2013 15:22

Cheryl

Cheryl or sheryl pronunciation is another divider

insideout · 01/10/2013 15:57

Shar lot here (south west) equal emphasis!

lottiegarbanzo · 01/10/2013 16:00

You are right.

I've encountered a few people in the SE of England who place equal emphasis on the second syllable and it sounds very drawly and annoys me but I wouldn't say it is wrong, just a local accent.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/10/2013 16:04

The people who annoy me with their equal emphasis do drawl a bit, so it's a drawn out 'chaarl' then an emphatic 'lot', as if they're reading the word aloud for the first time. A nice, confident 'char-lut' sounds much more natural and nicer.

Sparrowfarts · 01/10/2013 16:09

Sharlut. Emphasis on first syllable. Standard lazy English vowel sound, from the people who brought you Birmingum.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/10/2013 17:19

Thanks Tatties but true - rhymes with harlot and, less precisely but he emphasis is right, with scarlet.

Of course if we want get all proper about it, it's origins are German, so char-lot-tuh.
