Barley?

Hi,

I once met a young girl called Barley and I thought it was a beautiful name and really suited her. I have always kept it at the back of my mind thinking maybe to use for dd3 if we have another girl this time...

But how does it come across to you? Old, posh, chavy, plain odd? And do you like it?

Thanks. Smile

I like it. There was a "first" Summer or Daisy once, and their friends probably sniffed at them.

I also find Poppy much sillier, but that still leaves Barley in the 'really silly' category.

PuddingAndHotMilk · 14/09/2013 05:22

I know a Barley, she's a lovely salt of the earth type with 2 teenage daughters. It's a lovely, if unusual, name. If you like it, go for it. Thanks

Well, Daisy is a nickname for Marguerite/Margaret so that's not a good example.

Personally I think Summer is silly. [shrug]

It sounds like the name of a pet rather than a child.

BangOn · 14/09/2013 14:01

I really like it. It's folky.

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 14/09/2013 14:09

I had a cat called Barley when I was a kid.

RoadToTuapeka · 15/09/2013 12:22

Barley? Like grain and oats? I would hate to be called Barley. Poor child if they get that name.

LeoandBoosmum · 16/09/2013 02:39

It's makes me think of Robinson's lemon barley drink... :(

SmallTorch · 16/09/2013 02:48

Actually, I think it's nice.

DizzyPurple · 16/09/2013 02:49

Nope, don't like it. Yes a bit hippyish. I knew a Bramble once, even worse!

Secretswitch · 16/09/2013 03:24

If you love the name then you should use it. It is unusual and you are certain not to have five other Barley's in her class. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 16/09/2013 04:19

I also know a man called Barley; it's an old English male name.
We had a cat called Barley as well. A boy cat.

GiGiGi · 16/09/2013 04:27

Barley or Bali?
Still horrible whatever.

NadiaWadia · 16/09/2013 05:32

To me, it is a grain or (possibly) a surname. Never a first name for a little girl. Also, people will mishear it as 'Barney'.

JollySleepyGiant · 16/09/2013 05:36

It grows in fields round here. It's a crop, not a name.

rachel234 · 16/09/2013 06:59

Poppies, Irises and Roses grow on fields too.

WantedGSOH · 16/09/2013 07:01

My DH had a retriever called Barley. To me it definitely sounds like a pets name, as well as a crop of course.

OneWiseWasp · 27/07/2024 07:01

I wonder if i was that little girl…

GoldenLegend · 27/07/2024 11:07

Naff. It’s a name for an untrained Labrador.

TenThousandSpoons · 27/07/2024 13:03

I quite like the sound of it. For me it’s a surname and would work for a boy rather than a girl.

Middle name for Pearl

Daisybuttercup12345 · 30/07/2024 21:18

Lovely for a dog, not a child.
