Barley?

Hi,

I once met a young girl called Barley and I thought it was a beautiful name and really suited her. I have always kept it at the back of my mind thinking maybe to use for dd3 if we have another girl this time...

But how does it come across to you? Old, posh, chavy, plain odd? And do you like it?

Thanks. Smile

My DH had a retriever called Barley. To me it definitely sounds like a pets name, as well as a crop of course.

Poppies, Irises and Roses grow on fields too.

It grows in fields round here. It's a crop, not a name.

To me, it is a grain or (possibly) a surname. Never a first name for a little girl. Also, people will mishear it as 'Barney'.

Barley or Bali?
Still horrible whatever.

I also know a man called Barley; it's an old English male name.
We had a cat called Barley as well. A boy cat.

If you love the name then you should use it. It is unusual and you are certain not to have five other Barley's in her class. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Nope, don't like it. Yes a bit hippyish. I knew a Bramble once, even worse!

Actually, I think it's nice.

It's makes me think of Robinson's lemon barley drink... :(

Barley? Like grain and oats? I would hate to be called Barley. Poor child if they get that name.

I had a cat called Barley when I was a kid.

I really like it. It's folky.

It sounds like the name of a pet rather than a child.

^There was a "first" Summer or Daisy once, and their friends probably sniffed at them.

Well, Daisy is a nickname for Marguerite/Margaret so that's not a good example.

Personally I think Summer is silly. [shrug]

I know a Barley, she's a lovely salt of the earth type with 2 teenage daughters. It's a lovely, if unusual, name. If you like it, go for it. Thanks

I also find Poppy much sillier, but that still leaves Barley in the 'really silly' category.

In my Scottish accent it sounds absolutely nothing like Bailey or Bali, you couldn't possibly confuse them.
I think it's a nice sound but a bit too odd for me.

Sadie204 · 13/09/2013 17:38

I don't think it's that bad but agree that it will get annoying correcting people who think it's Bailey.

ha ha Jamie, that was the joke I nearly made. I didn't quite get there. You're wheat, I'm chav, I mean chaff!

I don't like Poppy either - it's twee, to my ears. But tastes just do differ so widely

Zoe

It's not chavvy, it's chaffy
