riskit4abiskit · 25/08/2013 16:12

Because its just about the only female name we have both said we like!

The full name would be Catherine Ellen name (one syllable last name).

Looking for unusual nn from Catherine too:

Kate / katie
cathy /cath , dont like.
Kitty

any more ideas folks? Thanks.

Kat or Katkin Grin

BlackMogul · 26/08/2013 18:46

Sorry I have an opinion which is different from yours, Maryz. I thought that was the reason why people ask questions and people respond with alternative views without being them described as odd. Obviously people who have used Catherine like it, but Catherine will now be associated with the Duchess and is associated with someone that age or in their 20s where we know loads, especially shortened to Katie. Just my opinion.

MorphyBrown · 26/08/2013 19:28

It's a classic name.

It wasn't your differing opinion that was off, Mogul, it was your suggestion that the OP needed to choose a different name to ensure her DD was special. Your post was not nicely put at all.

ThePeppermintHippo · 26/08/2013 22:23

Catherine is a lovely name, not boring at all just a timeless classic. The C spelling is definitely the best IMO! I don't think it's too popular these days anyway (I definitely see a lot fewer Catherine's than Charlottes etc) so would be refreshing to see actually. Catherine Ellen is a really nice combo.

riskit4abiskit · 26/08/2013 23:09

Thanks again everyone
I hadnt thought of kay as a nn so good idea!
I dont think this name scores highly in the top 100 so maybe it will be a bit unusual in years to come?
thanks for an honest opinion moghul.
Thanks for your kindness MaryKatherine ( this is my preferred spelling btw).

Smile Kay is a lovely and unusual nn. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

littlemog · 26/08/2013 23:25

It makes me think of Catherine the Great who was most certainly not boring!

But.....I do think that Catherine Ellen is a full on dull name though. Sorry OP.

Esker · 26/08/2013 23:28

I'm a Catherine and have always been called it in full, hate being called Cathy but hardly anyone tries it.

Remember having an argument w a friend spelt Kathryn about the superior spelling. She shut right up when I cited St Catherine of Alexandria and Catherine the Great!

DalmationDots · 26/08/2013 23:28

It is nice
I would use Katherine though so it can be Katie or Kitty should you feel the need for a nickname or your DD wants to be known as something shorter later in life

BlackMogul · 26/08/2013 23:29

Riskitforabiskit - I seemed to have upset a few people here. My original comment was not intended to offend. What is passive aggressive? No-one has ever said that to me before. It was not a sarcastic comment either. I just believe that names can sometimes do more for you than just being a label. As such they are important and it seems a shame that parents are so risk averse with names, especially for boys. I was not suggesting your daughter would not be special. Of course she will be.

NadiaWadia · 26/08/2013 23:59

Well names are not usually unique. So you can try to pick a name that makes you feel 'special' and then find it goes to the top ten a few years later- so your plans for 'uniqueness' come to nothing.. Names are often popular and/or classic just because they are nice names, and have good and interesting associations to them.

Each child is an individual and unique in their own way anyway

ShadowSummer · 27/08/2013 00:06

There's enough Catherine's around for it not to be an automatic "Catherine = Duchess of Cambridge" association.

Just like there's enough William's around for it not to be an automatic "William = future King of England" association.

And I may be wrong, but I don't think Catherine (regardless of spelling) is a particularly popular baby name at the minute - although I would put it in the timeless classic category - so OP's DD would have a pretty good chance of not being one of 6 Catherine's in her class at school, if that counts for anything.

Kelziz · 27/08/2013 00:30

I have a little Katherine, she loves it as much as me and is called it in full. We haven't come across another of any derivative through the nursery/pre-school years. I wouldn't worry about duchess afiliations; there have been plenty of other royal Katherines, mine was inspired by the Tudor consort queens. I was reading Wuthering Heights when I found out I was pregnant so that kind of clinched it for us.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 27/08/2013 01:00

I think it's boring. Sorry

MummyBeerest · 27/08/2013 01:28

I love it, more so because it's still classic and traditional but has a wide variety of nns. I love the name Katie, rregardless of how many I've known. And the nn Cat is cool.

trolleycoin · 27/08/2013 01:56

No not boring. Timeless classic.

Boring is trying to find the most unusual name to make out that the child is unique, when all kids are unique and special on their own way, regardless of whether they are named Sarah or Trixibella

crazykat · 27/08/2013 02:20

It's my name and I love it. I also hate Kate, Katie, kathy, kath as nn. I you don't want others to use them say so. Or you could use your own - kitty is lovely I wish I'd thought to use it at school as I refused to go by the others above.

IME if you use a certain nn then as she grows your DD will use it and so will others.

LeoandBoosmum · 27/08/2013 02:34

I prefer it spelt either Katherine or Katharine, maybe shortened to Kate.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 27/08/2013 08:21

I've always liked this name, and honestly, so much prefer it with a C. Much more elegant, to my eye. Who cares if the full name and nickname start with different letters? This happens with loads of nicknames.

I think Cate is a great nickname for Catherine, but anyway, Kitty is fine too (although I personally don't really like it, the letter it starts with is irrelevant).

There are hardly any baby Catherines around these days - she, and the name, will both be special. Such a refreshing change to all the Rubys, Millys, Ellies and Lilys...

littlemog · 27/08/2013 12:54

I much prefer it spelled with a K tbh. Katherine looks much better and is more unusual.

Chee · 27/08/2013 22:15

You can also spell it Kathryn (nn Kay).

hollyisalovelyname · 27/08/2013 23:10

I think Catherine/ Katherine is a lovely name but people might think you named her after Kate Middleton.
I don't like Kay- very old fashioned name. Any Kay I know is in her late 60's to 80's.
But I do like Elsie ( and that is very old fashioned)
