Because its just about the only female name we have both said we like!

The full name would be Catherine Ellen name (one syllable last name).

Looking for unusual nn from Catherine too:

Kate / katie
cathy /cath , dont like.
Kitty

any more ideas folks? Thanks.

I like Catherine a lot and don't think it's boring at all, although I do prefer it spelt with a K.

Having said that though, if you really don't like Cath / Cathy as potential nicknames, it might be better to avoid Catherine.

MumnGran · 25/08/2013 22:45

Loved it, and used it!
She has been "Cat"to friends and family for years, and only one person has ever called her Cathy (because he is too dim to see my frown, or realise she never answers to it)

IForgotMyPencil · 25/08/2013 22:53

I'm a Katherine, but I've always been a Kay, which I suppose you can only have with the K form of the name. :)

BlackMogul · 25/08/2013 23:07

Catherine Middleton..... That's about it really. Tried, tested and boring. Can you REALLY find NOTHING else to make your daughter seem a tiny bit individual? Do you own a baby name book? If not, get one quickly and read it. So many wonderful names to make your little girl just a bit more special. People remember you if you have a slightly unusual name, not odd or cringeworthy, just not used by too many people.

MaryKatharine · 25/08/2013 23:44

Hmm I'm quite sure the OPs litl girl with be farly special to her anyway. She doesn't need to avoid the name, Catherine, in order to make her DD special. Strangely, my Catherine is very special to me too. Hmm

I think it's a fairly boring full name which has lovely nn potential. I really like Cathy and Kitty. Cathy would actually be very unusual now.

WafflyVersatile · 26/08/2013 00:00

Cathy, Cath, Cat, Katie, Kate, Kit, Kitty, Rene (pronounced reenee). Can't really be boring if you can get that many familiars from it.

It is underused now, but in the 60's it must've been very popular as there were 6 in my year at secondary and two in primary.
It's a lovely name. Bring back Catherine!!

SaucyJack · 26/08/2013 00:41

I think it's a bit dated tbh, and not a name I would associate with a baby.

Beautiful name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/08/2013 01:24

Yes.

ItsNotATest · 26/08/2013 01:30

It's OK, it's a proper name without abnormal spelling and -Mae or -Ellie at the end Grin.
Kate is good for a shortened version. Personally I would avoid Kitty like the plaque, cutesy animal name. All very well until she's gets to about 11, at which point it becomes ridiculous. But that's just my opinion and I really hate cutesy names, just can't take the owners of them seriously Blush

TheBleedinObvious · 26/08/2013 05:52

Yes I find it boring but some nicknames are nice.

Choose a more interesting middle name though and it won't be as dull :)

It's a lovely name and not popular at the moment and it has loads of 'shorts' that are all different. It also won't date unlike Lily, Freya etc.

Themarriedwoman · 26/08/2013 06:48

Kit?
That is my grandmother's name, short for Kathleen though.
Both my grandmothers's were Kathleen, one was Kit and one was Kay. I like both of those nicknames (obviously!)

Biscuitsneeded · 26/08/2013 18:10

Gosh, I think Catherine/Katherine is great. Not boring at all. She'll be the only one among the sea of Poppies and Mollies and Lillies and Isabellas - far, far nicer!!
