Sophie or Laura

Some thoughts please! I don't know what I'm having, but will leave boys names until another day.

I like both names and would choose Sophie straight away if it wasn't for it's popularity. This is my first baby and so don't have loads to do with lots of small children - will there be loads of babies called Sophie and should I avoid it because of this?

I like Laura as it is simple and not as 'pretty' as Sophie. However, middle name is chosen based on family link and is quite fuss-free too so not sure if it will go as well as Sophie would. Surname is one syllable if that makes a difference...

Thanks

Both lovely. Sophie is exquisite. It may be popular, but that's because t is classic.

RiceorChips · 16/08/2013 18:42

Both are lovely though I do prefer Sophie.
However, so do lots of other people so it is much more popular than Laura.
Saying that, so far I have only come across 2 Sophie's compared to 1 Laura in the baby groups DS goes to.

SantanaLopez · 16/08/2013 18:49

Laura will be so unusual and lovely now.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 16/08/2013 19:05

Laura. Sophie is a bit bland.

exoticfruits · 16/08/2013 19:08

Both are nice- I think I would put Laura first.

Cheeseandlotsofwine · 16/08/2013 19:36

Thanks for your replies. It's difficult, I think Sophie sounds better with our middle/surname, but I like that Laura isn't so popular.

Have a couple of months to decide..

I prefer Laura. I find Sophie a bit twee.

SoftSheen · 16/08/2013 21:28

Both lovely names. I would go for Laura.

mervynmouse · 16/08/2013 21:32

Laura. My lovely sister's name. Very popular in mid 80's but definitely due a revival!

Scruffey · 16/08/2013 21:43

Both lovely. I know sisters called Sophie and Laura.

Doesn't matter what name you choose - before DB and VB had their DD, a friend of mine chose what she thought was a unique name for her DD. It is Harper! She was horrified when it was used only a few weeks later by the Beckhams because she thought it was so unique. Of all te small kids i know (lots) i only know one Sophie and no Lauras.

Suggestions for a boy: Matthew, Daniel.

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2013 21:53

Laura :)

Cheeseandlotsofwine · 16/08/2013 21:56

We're pretty sure it will be one of these so hopefully one will stand out more - or it will be a boy, or if a girl, it will look straight away like a Sophie or a Laura!

Thanks for comments.

Only had an initial think of boys names - both agree on James at the moment, but more research needed! (like Matthew but SIL had one recently).

Sophie. Laura sounds dated. Most are in their 20s. Not a name I like.

MrsBottesini · 16/08/2013 23:59

both bland and boring... and I like truly classic names. Ok for a middle name.

leobear · 17/08/2013 10:46

They are truly classic names!

AmandaCooper · 17/08/2013 10:59

It sounds like you prefer Sophie so on that basis I'd go with Sophie and wouldn't get too hung up on how relatively popular the names are. DS has quite a popular name but so what?

riskit4abiskit · 17/08/2013 11:00

Love laura, what about emma?

Cheeseandlotsofwine · 17/08/2013 11:13

We love Emma but surname has m's in it so it is a bit of a mouthful.

Other classic names we like either don't go with surname or are existing family names.

Thanks all

I love Laura, should I ever have dd3 she'll be called Laura.

Sophie has never appealed much.

KatieScarlett2833 · 17/08/2013 11:16

I have a Laura Smile

EleanorRugby · 17/08/2013 18:50

I have a Sophie and I'm always surprised that it has been a Top 10 name for the last few years. I haven't come across any others of her age or younger (she's 4). However I have found there are lots of older Sophies aged 8-10.

Sophia is popular here (southeast) I know lots of toddler Sophias.

My Sophie is the only one at her large pre-school, but there are 3 Tallulahs, 3 Rubys and 3 Tillys.

Of course other areas of the UK could be inundated with baby Sophies!!

Sadie204 · 17/08/2013 20:29

If you're not 100% on Laura, maybe could consider Lauren or Laurel? Or Sophia instead of Sophie. Very similar but just a little different. I personally LOVE Laurel but surname begins with L and it sounds silly together lol. Either sound lovely, good luck with your name search Smile

pommedechocolat · 17/08/2013 22:27

Abigail?

HahaHarrie · 17/08/2013 22:55

I know 3 toddler Laurens. It must be making a come back I remember it bing very popular in the 80s. How about Lara?

Lots of Sophie's too. Not surprising, but lovely names. How about Josephine nn Josie?

TallulahBetty · 17/08/2013 23:00

Laura. Sophie is too "meh" for me.
