I think we have decided on this for our baby. DH loves it and i think i do too. Nothing else is really grabbing me anyway!
I like that it sounds strong and quirky but i think it would be cute on a toddler too. The only thing that puts me off slightly is whether it has been ruined by The Office (American version) and whether everyone will think 'Assturd' when they hear it.

What do you think?

Love it.

baskingseals · 16/08/2013 08:33

Same as packedlunch, I love this name.

Caip · 16/08/2013 08:33

I haven't seen the American Office, to me Astrid is German
Nice and different

fanjodisfunction · 16/08/2013 09:22

I love this name and I would use it if DH didnt hate it.

Ihatepeas · 16/08/2013 10:46

Was on my list for dd. I really like it.

Laquila · 16/08/2013 10:47

I think it's a lovely name and would have it on my list if I could think of a nice nn for it! (Because I just know it would haven't get shortened, in my family)

And FWIW, I've never seen the American version of The Office :)

r3d3 · 16/08/2013 10:52

Lovely name. I've seen American office and don't remember ass turd, if that helps. It does need a good nickname that isn't ass or Asti though.

CleanAllTheThings · 16/08/2013 10:54

Nice positive feedback so far! Thanks all. I suppose most people won't have seen the American Office but i know a few of my family and friends have and it will probably be the first thing that comes to mind when i tell them the name! I still think it is a good name.

Laquila - The nickname thing struck me as well as there isn't really a way to shorten it. Not a massive issue for me though.

r3d3- Yeah, i wonder if any mumsnetters with their own Astrid have come up with a good nickname?

great name/.....never seen the US Office. Sure it won't matter - she will fill her own shoes with Astridness.

Rhubarbgarden · 16/08/2013 13:19

Beautiful name. I wouldn't shorten it - it's only two syllables, why do you need a nickname? I don't get this MN obsession with choosing nicknames before a baby is even born. Hmm

fanjodisfunction · 16/08/2013 13:26

Yeah the name doesn't need a nn

FingersCrossedLegsNot · 16/08/2013 13:50

Love the name Astrid but discounted it due to no nice nn, though I'm liking the suggestion above of Asti......cute, cute, cute!

itsBeer0cl0ck · 16/08/2013 13:52

I think it's ferociously ugly! Ass Trid. I'm guessing you're not after 'pretty' though!

But one dissenter won't put you off! I like names like Olga, Heidi, Ingrid and Lois though. Strong names, with a Germanic feel. So I like the style of Astrid but just not the actual sound.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/08/2013 13:58

I quite like it but prefer Ingrid. Never seen the American Office.

Secretswitch · 16/08/2013 14:02

Lovely name. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Best wishes to you and your family..

Moche · 16/08/2013 14:14

I liked this until my German mother pointed out that Astrid basically means a kick in the arse in German. But if you have no German connections, I doubt any one else would think of this & I rather love this name (although I can never use it...thank you DM).

CleanAllTheThings · 16/08/2013 14:28

The nickname thing isn't an issue and it certainly doesn't put me off. It's just something that crossed my mind.
We wanted a nice strong name rather than something airy fairy that is sweet on a little girl but cringey on an adult. I think Astrid is just different enough without being really out there.

Moche - nope, no German connection!

I don't think it's an "MN obsession", necessarily, to choose a nn before a baby's born - in my case it's more that that I can think of hardly any people in my family or extended family who aren't called by a nn (for the vast majority, a shortened version of his/her name), so I don't think it's unreasonable to think ahead ;)

womma · 16/08/2013 21:01

It's lovely. Makes me think of Astrud Gilberto, gorgeous.

EatingAllTheCrumpets · 16/08/2013 21:06

I love the name Astrid, I thinks I very pretty name but also a very intelligent name if that makes sense. I love Astrid from the tv show Fringe, she was beautiful, kind, intelligent, caring probably why I like the name

CruCru · 16/08/2013 22:04

I love it. Only thing is that where I live (north London) there are lots. However, I don't know about the rest of the country.

5madthings · 16/08/2013 22:09

Love it, it was on our list for dd and would be a contender if we ever have any more.

5madthings · 16/08/2013 22:11

Last year Astrid was at 613 in the one statistics with 63 baby girls being called Astrid, it seems to have been the same for the last few years, so its not popular at all. I know one Astrid :)

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 17/08/2013 11:03

I know a few Astrids and am Swedish, it's used here too Smile I love the name so much, and wanted to use it if DS was a girl, but because I was living in th UK at the time, I was a bit hesitant, but looking back, I was being stupid. It's a strong, beautiful name.
