Help me name ds2: do your worst to my shortlist

Ds2 is due in a few weeks and dh and I can't think of a single name we both feel is 'the one' - but then I wasn't completely sure about ds1's name until he arrived and made it his own.

So, current thinking is, in no special order:

Peter
Gilbert
Arthur
Clement
Robert
Thomas

Help!

Yy, another vote for Jonty.
What about Hugo?

shoobidoo · 11/08/2013 22:07

I really like Clement! It sounds strong, cool, masculine and is not overused. Great classic.

How about Dominic, Quentin or Magnus?

Asher is a beautiful name.

Conina · 11/08/2013 22:09

Robin?

ByTheWishingWell · 11/08/2013 22:10

Definitely Robert.

Thomas and Peter are fine, but a bit boring maybe. Arthur still sounds very 'grandad' to me. And I think Clement and Gilbert are awful. I'm sorry!

cece · 11/08/2013 22:11

Peter - OK
Gilbert - not sure I'm keen but quite like Gil as nn
Arthur - OK but not for me
Clement - awful
Robert - OK but prefer Bobby or Bob
Thomas - prefer just Tom

elQuintoConyo · 11/08/2013 22:13

Gilbert is fabulous don't listen to ^^ Grin
Asher is lovely.
I'm very 'meh' on the rest, although Tomas (Spanish pronunciatin tom-AS) was on our shortlist for DS. We'rei Spain, not pretentious!

miffybun73 · 11/08/2013 22:20

Thomas or Peter - both are lovely.

Not keen on any of the others.

What about Daniel? Best name ever :)

blueblackdye · 11/08/2013 22:20

Thomas, Arthur are my fave onyour list. Mark, Eric and Nicolas were my pick for DS but when he was born we knew Nicolas was the right one.

janey1234 · 11/08/2013 22:23

I love Gilbert nn Gil. I wanted it for DS1 but DP vetoed. Disclaimer - I read a lot of Anne of Green Gables hence I love it so much!

LittleMilla · 11/08/2013 22:24

Although it's getting nailed on here, we have just called ds2 Gilbert. Gilby as a nn seems to be sticking. Also Gil and Gily.

Won't ever be called his full name unless he's REALLY naughty Wink

kiwik · 11/08/2013 23:32

I have a Gilbert, and Clement is high on my list for DC4 if it's a boy, so those would be my top picks from your list.
I love Peter too, but that is FIL's name.

Really liking Dominic, Nicholas and Solomon as well at the moment.

kiwik · 11/08/2013 23:34

Oh, and our Gilbert gets called Gil quite a lot, sometimes Gilly. Never Bert or Bertie though.
He's 5 now, and still the only Gilbert I've come across. (DH gave in to my Anne of Green Gables passion for the name.)

FeegleFion · 11/08/2013 23:42

DS' middle name is Robert (after his daddy) and I like it, as a middle name.

I love Jolyon! If you like Jonty, what about Monty?

lljkk · 12/08/2013 08:50

Claude = Clod, wouldn't go there.
Albert -> Albie or Bertie, okay by you?
Jonty without Jonathan would work, I'm sure. Jon ok by you?
Fish have gills, wouldn't go there.

Linguaphile · 12/08/2013 09:18

My favourites are Peter, Robert and Thomas, but Gilbert is also good (reminds me of Gilbert Blythe in the LM Montgomery books).

shrinkingnora · 12/08/2013 19:30

Love Gilbert. Had a really nice friend called Gilbert when I was a child. What about Gideon?

chattychattyboomba · 12/08/2013 19:34

I really don't like Gilbert or Robert. Sorry!
Clement is nice but seems quite feminine...
Favourites are Arthur and Thomas.

TiggyD · 13/08/2013 21:33

Peter - A bit wet but acceptable. Just.
Gilbert - Isn't that the name for a glob of phlem? No.
Arthur - Old name but coming back in. Arty for a nickname.
Clement - Was he born aged 80? Granddad name not coming back in.
Robert - Yeah. No weird and popular.
Thomas - See Robert.

TenthMuse · 13/08/2013 21:58

Peter or Arthur both lovely.

Frikadellen · 13/08/2013 23:38

I like Clement and Gilbert..

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 14/08/2013 00:28

Peter -little old fashioned, but classic.
Gilbert- bit wet.
Arthur - love it so that probably means it's destined to get popular.
Clement- still think of Clement Freud
Robert- bit ordinary, again a classic though.
Thomas - love it, oh yes, very popular.

How about Gabriel, nn Gabe?

Sunnysummer · 14/08/2013 08:24

I love Gilbert (probably due to a massive childhood crush on Gilbert Blythe) but was comprehensively veto-ed by DH and family - it is still on the uncool side of old fashioned for a lot of people!

Peter is lovely too, and at least in my area is actually quite rare for children in our area.

Jolyon Hmm I am also a Trollope fan but the name just feels like a lifetime of misspelling and mispronunciation.

almapudden · 14/08/2013 08:46

I love Gilbert, Robert and Clement. I think Clement is my favourite. The others are nice but dull imo.
