Juliet - why does everyone here seem to love it?

I have seen several threads here recently where people say that they love the name Juliet. Why? And what other names evoke a similar feel to Juliet?

No idea, I actually prefer Julie as a name. Quite sweet I think and not very common.

Lanceolate · 08/08/2013 20:36

It's classic, elegant and timeless.

Julie is not.

OutragedFromLeeds · 08/08/2013 20:43

I really don't like it. There's a reason it's underused imo. I like Julia and Julianna though.

Saffyz · 08/08/2013 20:46

It's elegant, literary, understated.

I love it but didn't like the nickname potential, so we didn't use it. I'm terrible for shortening names.

whatsaduckdo · 08/08/2013 20:52

I love it. If I had a daughter that's ideally what I would like to call her but do worry that it's a bit old fashioned.

whatsaduckdo · 08/08/2013 20:53

I am a little gutted however that others seem to love it so much too....I thought I was being original!

DontCallMeBaby · 08/08/2013 21:03

People may love it, but they don't use it. I've only ever met one - she's a very good friend, love her, never would have called DD Juliet as it would have to have been after my friend, and that wasn't something I wanted to do. Plus because I only know one Juliet my associations with her are strong, it's a name for a delicate slip of a woman, not the woman DD is likely to be!

Yika · 08/08/2013 21:07

I also prefer Julie, which I find much softer. Juliet is quite hard-sounding.

GertBySea · 08/08/2013 21:20

I have a Juliet. I love it. People grow into their names and it has suited her all the way from a cheeky toddler to a shy school girl. It is irritating how many people assume its Juliette though. Even family cards sometimes arrive addressed that way.
I would never have thought that was the spelling people would gravitate towards.

Summerfever · 08/08/2013 21:27

Juliet is a timeless and beautiful name. It is strong yet very feminine which is a rare quality. I would have loved to have used the name, but one of my siblings beat me to it!

AnxiousAugusta · 08/08/2013 21:39

It's beautiful but not used very often.

CormoranStrike · 08/08/2013 21:44

It is beatiful, timeless an elegant

HorryIsUpduffed · 08/08/2013 21:45

Julie is horribly dated.

Julia, Juliet and Juliana are more classic, elegant, timeless.

They are also quite a contrast to the glut of frilly nicknamey -ee names (Lily, Poppy, Daisy, Holly, Molly, etc) which some name geeks people are very bored by.

ELR · 08/08/2013 21:48

I love it too, just this morning I had a conversation with DH about what a lovely name it was! Currently ttc no 3 so names are a hot topic in our household at the moment, sadly DH dislikes the name!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/08/2013 21:49

Not overly keen but Julie is far worse. I wanted Julia for DD2 but DH vetoed it as well as every other bloody name I suggested as he thought it sounded like on of his mother's friends. He has no imagination.

Sunnysummer · 09/08/2013 11:32

I don't like it, mostly because my teenage self thought that in the play she was a wibbling 13 year old fool... It is definitely more current than Julie, but Julianne or Julianna would have my vote first.

JumpingJackSprat · 09/08/2013 22:56

I dont like that spelling prefer juliette.

exoticfruits · 09/08/2013 23:06

I like it it, but definitely with the spelling- Juliet. I like it because it is elegant and classic.

I much prefer Julie and Julia. Not Julianna - too frilly.

sleepingbeautiful · 10/08/2013 04:36

I also find it elegant and like how it's stood the test of time. It makes a nice change from all the -a or -ie names.
Sadly we have a Julia and Julianne in close relation, so couldn't use it.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 10/08/2013 04:45

I don't particularly like the name itself - it would never make my short list - but I do appreciate the qualities it has that make people like it. Simple, timeless, non-frilly, literary, elegant, you wouldn't know how old its owner is.

SnoopyLovesYou · 10/08/2013 16:02

I wanted to call my firstborn Juliette for a period of my pregnancy. It's lovely. The only problem is that it's a bit girly, implying a small girl and not a grown woman.
