DSs both have traditional Scots names.
Looking for girl names but would prefer ones which are easy to pronounce for non Scots and are not "clumpy" no offence to anyone who has a Morag
Maybe Greer?

There used to be a tradition in Scotland of just adding 'ina' onto the father's name, eg Thomasina - would that be rubbish? To be properly authentic though, you'd pronounce it 'eye-na'.

weebarra · 31/07/2013 21:30

Ooh, she could be Craigina! Or not. I think my feminism wouldn't let me do that!

'Mhairi' is the vocative case of 'Mairi so when you're speaking to someone called 'Mairi' you say 'a Mhairi' instead. Same with any name that declines in the vocative case e.g. Sean/a Sheain, Seamus/a Sheamuis, Mairead /a Mhairead etc. (Caveat: I'm basing this on Irish grammar but the vocative case is the same in Scots-Gaelic I think, spelling might differ a bit though.)

So Mhairi and Mairi are two forms of the same name. Mairi is the 'correct' form to use as a given name but since Mhairi has become traditional for English speakers, like the way Hamish has, then I don't think it's a big deal personally.
