Would the initials VD be wrong

Or is that an old term for STI. I don't want a child to be lumbered with embarrassing initials.

Very very very wrong!

NotAnotherPackedLunch · 30/07/2013 13:06

Very wrong indeed.

SirBoobAlot · 30/07/2013 13:08

Very wrong.

SirChenjin · 30/07/2013 13:09

Oh no. No no no no no Grin

mignonette · 30/07/2013 13:10

Kids these days are familiar with STD but many do not know that VD is the same. Its kind of dying out. POAS is just as bad!

Crannog · 30/07/2013 13:10

Please don't do it.

DuchessFanny · 30/07/2013 13:11

Wrong i'm afraid ...

chickensaladagain · 30/07/2013 13:12

I think anyone under 30 wouldn't know what VD is

I'm closer to 40 and we called them STDs at school so I had to think about it

By the time your lo reaches the end of primary I would say it would be totally obsolete and fine to use

meditrina · 30/07/2013 13:13

Well, if you google "VD" the results are overwhelmingly venereal (Urban Dictionary has this definition "Something that Bishops and Generals catch from public toilet seats. The rest of us can catch it from fucking prostitutes.")

Yes, it's slowly becoming the less common term. No, the association has far from vanished and probably won't do so for quite some time to come.

Onyabike · 30/07/2013 13:17

Seriously? You would be mad to use the initials VD! The term is not obsolete! Look at Wikipedia, under "Sexually transmitted disease", it's referred to on there! NO NO NO!

Neverdonethisbefore · 30/07/2013 13:19

Thanks everyone, just what I expected but wanted to double check. I love a few names beginning with V but will have a rethink.

Not saying Op should use it rather that it has greater negative connotations for older people don't really rate wiki as a source tbh Smile but accept the argument that it is not yet obsolete enough to maybe use.

Wasn't the Beckhams accessories range called VBD once?

Onyabike · 30/07/2013 13:29

I'm not saying I rate wiki either, but it is used by A LOT of people! It's like suggesting that, because you don't rate what's in the Daily Mail, nobody reads it!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/07/2013 13:36

I wouldn't, sorry.

StarWanderer · 30/07/2013 20:57

Our little ones initials would have been CJD (as in mad cow disease!) and I'm so glad someone talked me out of it!!

Writerwannabe83 · 30/07/2013 21:09

Initials are a huge factor when deciding baby names Smile

Please don't inflict VD on your child.... Smile

Tickledyellow · 30/07/2013 21:30

Haaaaaaa haaaaaaa! Lol! This is a joke right?!!!!

QuietNinjaTardis · 30/07/2013 21:57

I had these initials until I got married. Only one girl at school really took the piss and I've had a few sniggers here and there but never anything too bad. Am 31 now. Am still a bit Hmm at my mum for not thinking about it. Can you give a middle name so there's an extra initial to use if needed?

miffybun73 · 30/07/2013 22:13

Very very wrong I'm afraid.

fedupwithdeployment · 30/07/2013 22:21

A girl I was at school with had those initials and she changed her name legally when she was about 11. Became known by her middle name.

Don't do it!

sourcreamandchives · 30/07/2013 22:26

I'm 33 & had the initials VD until I married 5 years ago. Even had them embroidered on front of games kit (with middle initial too). I knew what VD was, but most of my friends didn't - I used to tell them myself & laugh.

No one ever bullied me/made fun of me. OK, it wasn't ideal but it honestly didn't affect me negatively.

StayAwayFromTheEdge · 30/07/2013 22:37

Yes - The wife of a local footballer as VD embroidered on to her car headrests, I snigger every time I see it.

Anjou · 31/07/2013 00:04

People of a certain age know what VD is but, as another poster said, it'll be completely passé within a few years.

I'm sure Wiki et al list the correct meaning of VD, but is a kid really going to look it up to check if its something they can make a joke out of if they've never heard of the abbreviation VD? No.

I never use just the initials of my first & last name, I always include my middle initial too. I've always assumed most people do, but maybe I'm in the minority? I don't see it being a problem (except for people over 25) as long as there's a middle name to make it V?D.

Congrats by the way! Smile
