What do people think? (nb I'm not actually pregnant just curious). I came across it recently and loved it but never heard it before. Does it have a history?

I'm not a huge fan I have to say. I'd put it on a par with Brenda.

Alma probably does the flowers for her local church and owns many 1980s Laura Ashley floral frocks.

Alma is a Nans name to me. But they seem pretty popular at the moment.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 29/07/2013 12:03

I like it...

momnipotent · 29/07/2013 12:04

The only Alma I've "known" was on Corrie.

Quejica · 29/07/2013 12:09

I prefer Alba.

lucidlady · 29/07/2013 12:18

I like it. Ive got it on my list for any future DDs that I might have. I had an aunt called Alma - she was awesome. Very smart, glamorous and always having adventures.

Wbdn28 · 29/07/2013 12:43

Lovely name, underused and pretty.

SilkStalkings · 29/07/2013 13:55

Lovely Morrissey song called 'Alma matters' - have a look on Youtube.

EatYourCrusts · 29/07/2013 13:56

Beautiful.

DifferentNow · 29/07/2013 13:59

Yes, what Mom said.

TallulahBetty · 29/07/2013 16:34

Another of the Granny Chic trend. Not in a good way..

RoxyFox211 · 29/07/2013 21:33

I love love love it! It's the name of all the female characters in the History of Love which I'm reading atm. It also has lovely meanings in a variety of languages.

Exhaustipated · 30/07/2013 09:50

Reminds me of Corrie, but it is nice. Like Alba too.

shmuf · 30/07/2013 09:52

About what YoMamma said- in aramaic it means 'world', and in hebrew it is the name of a precious stone..beautiful name, used quite a lot in my part of the world!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 30/07/2013 09:59

I like it, but I'm possibly biased because I used to know a very lovely Alma - she had Italian heritage. It's a very serene name I think. I like Alba and Anna too.

hatebeak · 30/07/2013 19:47

I think of Alma Cogan. Also, I think it means apple in Hungarian. I like it a lot (not because of the apple thing especially, though)...

Ham69 · 30/07/2013 23:43

I like it. I know a lovely 6 year old Alma.

LittlePandaBear · 31/07/2013 08:08

I know of someone who called their baby girl Alma this year, but she lives in Sweden. I wonder if it's more popular there? My mum also has a friend called Alma, in her 60's. To be honest I thought it was very old fashioned but could be due a come back!

Doshusallie · 31/07/2013 08:12

Reminds me of alma pudden, sad overweight character in an Enid blyton book....

Locketjuice · 31/07/2013 08:24

Made me start singing sweet home Alabama..

RobinSparkles · 31/07/2013 08:26

Reminds me of Coronation Street too. I'd always want to say it in a whiney nasally voice a la Audrey Roberts.

LaRosaBella · 09/08/2013 00:01

Alma means soul in Spanish. I think it's lovely.

almapudden · 09/08/2013 00:22

Oi, doshusallie!

I think it's a beautiful name with a lovely meaning. Unusual without being weird.

Maud2011 · 09/08/2013 10:48

Battle of Alma?

I prefer Alba.
