Despite my best efforts to send psychic 'not George, not George' thoughts their way the worst has happened. Not sure that this will stop me using the name if its still my number one come December, but would like to consider some alternatives in case there is something lovely I haven't thought of.

Dh would like Jacob, I'm not keen on jake though for some reason. I like fairly traditional names and would like something that I could see as cute on a cheeky, chubby baby/toddler but also suitable for a teen and adult. I'd rather it not be massively over popular, but George and Jacob are both pretty common I think so I guess this is the least important of my criteria! Any ideas please?

I expect that by December you'll feel fine about it. George is a lovely, traditional name that will easily withstand the Cambridge blip (after all, William always sounded fine).

But if you want some others, how about: Alexander, Rupert, Richard, James, Stephen, Andrew, Philip, David, Michael, Joel?

I was also set on George (for a boy, after my Grandpa. I'm having a girl) but a name I also really loved was Gregory. Kind of similar but different?

Thanks for these, all lovely names but none of them really doing it for me if you know what I mean. Although actually there is something about rupert, I have a suspicion dh may consider this a bit 'posh' though, but will put it to him.

Imo no to jack. My ds is in a small school, around 30-35 a year group. And every single year group has at least one, if not two, jacks.

Thomas? I really like Tom but xh's eldest is Tom so was out for us to use.

I had George, jasper, Ryder on our short list but he became William.

We were also set on George, baby due in a month. It's such a standard name though that I I think there is no harm in using it still. Hardly like people would have thought, 'oh George, that's an interesting name I have never thought of that before'! It is from the same school as William, James, edward... Very traditional names. Not like deciding to call your baby Harper or Hero - ie not common so very clearly copied!

Joseph is lovely but also have one of those in the family I'm afraid - sorry I know I'm awkward. Am liking Benjamin and possibly Thomas (1st Bf was a Tom, is that weird?) they are both traditional and sensible for a grown up, but I can imagine them on a toddler too, just what I'm after.

Love Louis but my Surname begins with an L and I'm not sure if we could pull off the alliteration!

What about Hugo? If you like something a bit posh, cute on a toddler but classic, this could fit the bill.

I happen to share the same last name as the royals, and George Is what we've had our hearts set on. Silly but quite gutted, it's the only name I really like.
