What do people think about liam? Is this popular at the moment? DH thinks its a bit chavy - is he right?

I have a Liam and I don't think it's 'chavvy'. I read on here once that it is a naughty boys name - nothing could be further from the truth with mine!

Oh, and we rarely come across another Liam. My other boys have more unusual names and we seem to meet more of them!

Thats good to hear, its not a name we have really come across but not sure if its because we havent been listening out for it. I am liking it more and more...

I'm not over keen, partly because there were loads around when ds was born 12 years ago.

It is short for William not a name in itself I think

It's a gorgeous name I think. It is the Irish version of William and therefore is a name in itself rather than just being a shortened version of William

I have one and I think it's a great name, not too common and quite contemporary. It's not unique I have seen a handful of others in his school.

I like it, a normal, run of the mill name here in Ireland, not overly common though either:) And not short for William, is a name in itself.

Both William and Liam derive from the Norman/French Guillaume (rather than Liam from William), so Liam has every bit as much of a pedigree as the English version.

My 19yo brother is Liam, the only one I personally know.

I love it, but I'm biased as I have a Liam. I know 3 others of different ages. Can be used a short form of William but is definitely a name in it's own right as others have said. My OH wasn't sure about it at first but I can't imagine our LO being called anything else.

I know quite a few in their 20s, but my kids went to a Catholic school full of Irish immigrant families.

I like the name very much. Liam from 90210 is fit.

It was (in England) a lovely old Irish name, that unfortunately had been taken over by the Jeremy Kyle brigade. It's a name that makes me doubly wince; 1, it's a 'common' name in a lot of quarters, and 2; it was lovely and used by respectable people.

I really like it, I only know of one Liam at my DC's school (in Scotland).

Although I like the name myself I do think some regarded as a slightly 'chavvy' name. I think it would help if you had some Irish link...

I really like it. If dd1 was a boy she was going to be Liam, we ended up calling her Leah.

Pretty much the Irish equivalent of Thomas or Edward. Plain, strong, often used.

I've got a half-Irish/half-English Liam. He's actually William on his birth cert but always called Liam thereby pleasing both sides of the family!

I don't consider it "chavvy" - v respectable old name in Ireland. (Plenty of priests called Father Liam!)

I know 3 Liam's, one is my bro 20, a friends son 3, the other is about 27. Of course to a name in its own right. And it's not chavvy at all in my eyes.

My eldest is Liam...he's 16 now and I love his name......although I do often call him Lee....but I like that name too

Very nice Irish name and also a very MC name in the US (same with Kevin - cf Home Alone).

Weirdly enough the Liams I know (and I know several among the DCs' classmates) all have a sister named Rachel.
