Pretentious in the extreme if you are not Welsh? I just think it is very pretty. But wouldn't want to saddle potential DS or DD with something worrisome/cause for teasing.

burberry

There's nothing wrong with Aneurin! There's a v handsome young actor called Aneurin Barnard, think he's in the White Queen currently.

I've never met an Eirlys but hey - granny chic isn't just for "English" names Grin

gin those are fabulous names! Smile

Particularly love Anwen

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2013 23:38

A name on this thread is my middle name btw Smile

It was only because my paternal grandparents refused to pronounce it properly it isn't my first name. Apparently it was in part that they really couldn't say it and the rest was they thought Welsh names were stupid. They were Welsh Hmm

gintastic · 04/07/2013 23:38

We love them, and they definitely aren't any others in their school :-)

Leeds2 · 05/07/2013 00:34

I know an Angharad (aged 15) born of English/Indian parents. It was DH's friends who were parents. I told him it was a Welsh name. He was hugely congratulated on knowing this (??) because most people, apparently, assumed it was an Indian name. I think it is absolutely lovely.

mathanxiety · 05/07/2013 01:56

Love it, am not Welsh, wanted it for DD3, got shot down in flames. Still think about it sometimes

I love the meaning too.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 05/07/2013 08:21

I've just realised a girl I went to school with was called this and not 'Anne Harrod' I assumed she always introduced herself with her surname and that if anyone mentioned her they said her surname to differentiate between another Anne.

One of my friends is an Angharad (aged 30) and she hates it.

She calls herself Annie.

It wasn't until I'd known her for over 2 years before she told me that Annie wasn't actually her real name.

squoosh · 06/07/2013 11:44

I don't think it's pretty in the slightest, it looks like an exclamation of pain.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/07/2013 12:32

I think it's dreamy (spot the Poldark fan).

bugsybill · 06/07/2013 13:29

I like and think its fine to use if your not welsh. :)

Who actually knows the details of your family ancestry anyway?

bugsybill · 06/07/2013 13:31

(Besides your family and they only know your side and not your husbands and vice versa)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/07/2013 13:40

I think there are a few of us on this thread Donkeys :o

LtEveDallas · 06/07/2013 13:51

DH vetoed my welsh girls names Sad. I wanted a Eirawen, Eleri, Arwen or Anwen. I ended up with a welsh dog instead ...Gwenllian.

I love Welsh names, was very disappointed with my (Welsh) DH.

KateF · 06/07/2013 13:59

Lovely name, I know a little Angharad aged about 5 with sisters Arianwen and Gwenllian (also lovely names). We don't live in Wales and everyone copes fine with their names. I wanted Welsh middle names for my girls to reflect my Welsh heritage but exH vetoed them Sad

specialsubject · 06/07/2013 14:04

if you aren't in Wales - she'll be Ang or Anj the moment she starts school.

gazzalw · 06/07/2013 14:18

She won't get her name shortened unless you want it to be....It's a lovely name and yes very much a reminder of Angharad Rees which can only be a lovely homage!

LingDiLong · 06/07/2013 15:18

I love the name Angharad - and I think it's one of the more well known welsh names too, as in lots of people from outside Wales have heard of it so I don't think you'd have pronounciation issues.

ithaka · 06/07/2013 15:20

Angharad just looks too angry to me and I don't think would sound pretty said by a non Welsh speaker.

JemimaMuddledUp · 06/07/2013 15:34

Angharad is DD's middle name, but we are Welsh and live in Wales. I comes from the word "cariad" which means love in Welsh. I don't think it is too tricky for non-Welsh people though, is it?

Oh, and DS1's best friend is called Aneurin (aged 10), as is DD's best friend's dad (aged 40). So you don't have to be 100 years old Grin

LingDiLong · 06/07/2013 15:35

I agree - Aneurin has gained popularity lately, I've heard quite a few kids called it! Eirlys does sound old-ladyish to me though

NoComet · 06/07/2013 15:39

I was brought up in Wales and suggested it for DD, but DH insisted on turning it into anhydrous - blooming chemists.

I like it, I loved poldark

hurricanemum · 06/07/2013 20:12

I know an Angharad who goes by Addie. lovely name and no bullying when we were at school:)

BestIsWest · 06/07/2013 20:21

I like it, it isn't too popular as welsh names go either.

Love Aneurin, wish we'd thought of it for DS.
