I have a Tabitha, middle name Marion, after mil.NOt foud out sex yet but if its a girl we definitly love Posy, very small possibility of using Josephine officially just in case and also because its dils mothers name.

All my children have family names as middle names and theres only really NIcola,Karen,Eleanor and Ethel left.I dont like the first two so i am thinking ethel?

I know its very old lady like but i do love granny chic? Also love Percy for a boy but dh doesnt like it and whenever ive mentioned it ive had looks of pure horror,so lets hope its a girl!

Posy Ethel is beautiful. My DD born last weekend is Posy Violet. I've had mixed reactions to the name but I absolutely love it.

Eleanor is a lovely name, although I would say that :)

Ethel is a good choice as a middle name in tribute to a family member.

Posy is actually quite dreadful but marginally better if only a nn of the actual real name. But you say you're decided on Posy so that I guess is by the by.

Eleanor is beautiful; graceful and strong. Great name of some really fantastic women from 'history' for your DD to feel proud of being associated with. Looks lovely written down too.

I think why I feel strongly about Posy is that when I say it I mean it as an insult "xxx is a bit posy" and, to me, you might as well call someone Tossy or Wanky, I use it in the same kind of way. I genuinely feel sad to imagine a child being given a name so very likely to cause teasing. Why would you call a child something with a nasty meaning? At least Poppii-Mai, Kaidon etc don't actually mean anything and although not 'classy' not actually likely to cause problems for the children. I may be alone here though as I also say "Cripes!" and I'm aware that's on a bit of a down-turn.

Eleanor Josephine! Perfect name! Feminine but not cutesy, grown up but pretty, beautiful but unaffected.
Wish I had thought of it for DD1!

Can i PLEASE point out the word Posy does have a meaning,it means a posy/bunch of flowers, theres no such word as Posy meaning someone poses, afaik.

I am very confident it wont cause her any problems,no more than ay other child anyway.I guess we just move in different circles.

I think i prefer Eleanor for middle name.I do like Ethel but my surname is 2 sllable so i think the 3 syllable name balances it out.

DifferentNow- congrats on your new baby Flowers

and id ont get the grown up thing either, you just grow into your name, the only stage i can imagine it being difficult is maybe the teen years and even then it depends on personality.Posy Simmonds is an adult.

I have never heard anyone say 'xxxx is a bit posy'. Never ever.

However, in Ballet Shoes, wasn't the baby Posy introduced with the words 'Her name unfortunately is Posy' ? I don't have a copy to hand to check right now though.

Personally, I like it. Couldn't it be short for anything else? Persephone?

Eleanor is much nicer than Ethel though. Ethel is so Just William.

DD2 however, does say that if I had called her Posy she would either change her name or kill herself. But what does she know?!

You think the only stage it might be a problem are the teen years - these are the very worst years to have a difficult name!

Am I the only one who wonders what people who are so rude about the names chosen by others have called their own children?

I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to expressing an opinion but I think that some of the comments made about the OP's choice are despicable.

Being called Posy has certainly done Posy Simmonds the children's book illustrator, writer and cartoonist no harm. So far as I know she was born sometime in the 1940's so must be well into her 60's now.

Poncey Posy, if she's like her mother, then.

AmberSocks · 02/07/2013 20:55

no not poncey just an observation! If they were going to a school where most kids names were kaiden and mohammed then i would have to have to consider them standing out too much, but my ds1s best friend is called Loveday fgs! Smile
Posy really wont stand out round here, theres the fair share of Amelias and Harrys too though.

It does say that in the ballet shoes,it doesnt bother me tbh.
