Wallace?

What are your thoughts? Is Wallace too "and Gromit"; Wally too "Wall-E"? Too 'old man' still or back to being fresh and retro?
I've come to quite like the name but I'm a bit on the fence if it's ready for a comeback yet!

I love Wallace!

So ready for a comeback! Will age really well as your child grows up. I think of grandad-chic toddlers, rugby playing teenagers and suited up businessmen.

People will think of Wallace and Gromit, but that's not a bad association in my book! Love W&G!

Fab choice, sticking it on my list.

So it really seems to divide opinions! Two likes, two 'no's...
I'm not in Scotland btw - far from it, South East/home counties; and no Scottish connections or background whatsoever. Would it be more acceptable as a Scottish name? (As in, used by someone who's Scottish).

Personally I don't like it as I think it's a surname and since it shortens easily to wally that seems a bit much.

I really like Wallace as full first name but I would be concerned that it would be shortened to Wally, which would put me off it, sorry. Boys and men are quite keen to shorten names and use nicknames in my experience,so I don't think you could avoid Wally, whereas I think it is easier for girls/women to insist on using a full name.

However you might like the nickname Wally, so that may not concern you.

It would be very nice as a middle name.

Oh god, that scene from the Wire will stay with me forever. Harrowing. I didn't make the connection with the name Wallace until another poster pointed it out though. Still, there are enough reasons to avoid it besides that.

Sorry I hate it.. And definitely hear "and gromit". I'd just picture that Wallace and wouldn't be able to take the name seriously for a baby!

That's my surname! We wanted to call our baby Wilbur but was worried it'd get called Willy Wally.

Having said that no one has shortened my surname to anything awful (to my face).

Love the name Wallace and we are using it for our 3rd child. I like my kids having a mature name that can be cut down and fun when growing up. Probably call him Ace or Wallie. Not too long ago William, Clarence, Lawrence, Eli, Joseph, Owen were all considered too old for a baby boy. Our oldest is 7 and named William and he is called Will and sometimes Willie. Our daughter is 4 and she is Allacyn and we call her Alla, or Alli. We wanted a Scottish middle name and considering Wallace Kane. I loved William Wallace In Braveheart.

Exoticfruits........No parent can control cruelty but the name a child is called by parents and teachers are the names the child is known as. I know a Katherine and she is not Kathy. When one or two people try to call her Kathy she quickly corrects them. I also know a Michael that is Michael only! If his parents had called him Mike he would have been known as Mike. Kids can call Brock ......Broccoli. Dianna........die Anna! Brantley......brat ley! I knew a Jennifer called furball! There is no way to stop cruelty. My William is called William at school, the kids DO CALL him William. The nicknames are names we have for our kids and have not put down on school records. If we did....the school would call them by the shortened name. I like a strong name with a fun nick name. Making it great for a doctor, lawyer, and fun for sports, radio, acting, ect! Most names used today are surnames. Riley, Alexander, Shane, Thomas, Williams, Tyler, Taylor, ect. I love the name Wallace. I am just not sure what middle name to use. I like Kane, Ian, Shane, or my fathers name John! My Wallace will be a strong, confident, and happy baby boy!
