I'm not currently pg - just wondering what your thoughts are about Julian? I really like it, but no-one I know seems to! Generally, from who I've spoken to, the opinion is that it's effeminate, in the same way that Sebastian is (another boys name I love, incidentally!)

Nooooo!

DomesticCEO · 19/06/2013 13:20

I would think chinless wonder Grin

MolotovCocktail · 19/06/2013 13:20

Fair enough, but why?

Love it, but then I also love Sebastien as a name

sonlypuppyfat · 19/06/2013 13:22

Lovely proper mans name not all cutesy. And I am really really opinionated

Tickledyellow · 19/06/2013 13:22

Nothing wrong with the name but this feels like a female name which has been made male. I.e. Julia to Julian rather than the usual other way round! Too girly for any self respecting older teenage lad in my opinion! Think ahead to the future!

MolotovCocktail · 19/06/2013 13:25

Ah, although I really like Julian, it wouldn't be the name of a DS of mine - I've had that name chosen for a while (we have 2 DDs :) )

Oh, and its not Sebastian or Tarquin Grin

TWinklyLittleStar · 19/06/2013 13:28

Oh I like it. Not pregnant either but it was on my hypothetical list.

squoosh · 19/06/2013 13:42

Julian is wet with a side order of soggy.

And reminds me of that insufferable twat from the Famous Five.

MrsOakenshield · 19/06/2013 13:45

I always think of the sci-fi writer Julian May. Who's a woman. I think it's quite a cool name for a woman. Rubbish for a man . . .

IsabelleRinging · 19/06/2013 13:50

I love the name Julian, isn't it a Roman name, which makes me think of warriers and soldiers, so masculine in my eyes? Also Julian from The Famous Five springs to mind, noble and responsible.

Yonihadtoask · 19/06/2013 13:54

A bit effeminate in my head also.

I only know of one Julian, and I thought he was gay. Turns out to be married with a number of DCs.

Sebastian I don't mind though.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 19/06/2013 14:00

I like it, like Jools to. Don't know any children with the name at the moment. Some nice blokes though.

DomesticCEO · 19/06/2013 14:02

It makes me think of someone who is a yuppie guffawing tory MP type with a wimpy soggy handshake and still calls his mum mummy Grin

I have no idea why - it's just what comes to mind when i think of the name!

Theas18 · 19/06/2013 14:03

It's a fine name but as devotee of radio 4 extra to me It'll always be "julian and Sandy" from Round the horne!

TCforTopCat · 19/06/2013 14:03

My uncle was called Julian, he was very far from wet or soppy.
He drove a fire engine and I thought he was the coolest man on the planet.
Very sadly he is no longer with us but if I had had a son, Julian was definitely on the list Grin

tammytoby · 19/06/2013 14:38

I think Julian and Sebastian make a refreshing change from the cutesy, babyish sounding Archie/Alfie/Charlie type names. To me, they're strong, cool names (although I dislike the nickname Seb/Sebby).

bugsybill · 19/06/2013 15:16

I think it is quite nice but have never met one before. It does sound quite feminine but I don't think it could be a girls name either for some reason Confused

I much prefer Sebastian.

Eskino · 19/06/2013 15:33

I know a grown up Julian who is Jules. He's not soppy in the least but I do still think its a bit mimsy. Sebastian isn't the same IMO.

ZolaBuddleia · 19/06/2013 15:35

Jules is great, but yes, Julian is a bit wet. Like Francis and Robin.

Leeds2 · 19/06/2013 15:52

Wouldn't be my choice.

I don't mind Sebastian, but I wouldn't choose that either.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 19/06/2013 16:08

I like it, prefer it to Sebastian. Lots of boys names are a bit too soft imo. NOah, Finn. I prefer Julius it's a bit stronger.

natandmat · 19/06/2013 16:10

My brother is called Julien and has spent his whole life hating it! He is late 20's now and I would say only just accepting it! He is also far from effeminate or wet! I however love it! I even have Julius on my list, but I think it's a bit too similar!

lovepigeon · 20/06/2013 00:20

My brother has this name too FWIW he is in no way soppy - big rugby player, very masculine type of personality. I prefer the French spelling and pronunciation 'Julien' as I think it sounds nicer and more masculine.
