Elodie vs Sophie?

AmIGoingMad · 16/06/2013 21:52

Ok- I said the other day that the front runner often changes daily for me!

Which do you prefer, Elodie or Sophie?

Middle name Grace.

Sibling has name beginning with E.

I know that they're both popular names but I figure that's for a reason as I like them both!Smile

So, which do you prefer?

Thanks in advance!

Both are lovely. Thing with Elodie is people will get the spelling / pronunciation wrong - will that bug you?

Squidwoman · 17/06/2013 16:35

I'm an Elodie and my DD is Sophie. I'm a huge fan of both. I'm 41 and still get complemented on my name all the time. No need to shorten it. I have to spell to out a fair bit but it's worth it.

Just please don't stick an accent on the first E like the woman whose birth I read about in a magazine in the doctor's waiting room. The French don't!

AmIGoingMad · 17/06/2013 17:05

Ha squidwoman that's funny! So I'm thinking you're a fan of both names then! And no- definitely no accent in the first E as I know the French don't!

Cru I've been wondering if that would bother me as I definitely like the correct pronunciation of Ello dee in favour of Ella dee. Someone mentioned that on another thread and it has made me think but I still love the name.

As long as the emphasis is on the first E and not elOdie both Elladie and Ellodie sound the same I think. I usually say it's Melodie without the M for people who don't get it.

AmIGoingMad · 17/06/2013 17:18

Definitely with you on the pronunciation squidwoman! Emphasis on first e. I do prefer when people say the o as an o though and not as a soft a sound if that makes sense?! The a sound wouldn't offend me though.

Opinions seem pretty split here! And you've also got me thinking that we should still be considering Sophia.

Is it true that you get that feeling when you see little one that you just know which name to go for? With DS I was pretty out of it after a tough labour but we'd pretty much decided beforehand with him.

Both are lovely, but I prefer Sophia Grace to Sophie Grace.

MoonHare · 17/06/2013 22:09

Elodie is pretty and unusual.

Two initials the same don't matter at all imho. Post confusion is a minor irritation for a couple of years as teenagers, it's not as if they'll be living under the same roof all their lives - one hopes!

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 17/06/2013 22:22

Elodie

Would you consider

Sylvie
Sylvia ?

these both sound French, like Elodie, but are more unusual than Sophie

Also:

Serena
Elena
Claudia

AmIGoingMad · 17/06/2013 22:44

Sylvie is a pretty name but not sure that I like it as much as the other 2 ( or 3 including Sophia).

Yes hopefully they wouldn't have the issue of living at the same address forever! Although with mortgages at the moment.... But that's a whole other thread!Grin And post shouldn't be an issue really should it with one being a Miss and the other a Mr/Master, now that I think of that.

Any more opinions?

Reastie · 18/06/2013 17:49

I love Elodie, it was one of the maybes for DD. I had no idea it's popular at the minute, I thought it was unusual!

Reastie · 18/06/2013 17:50

You could maybe think about Eloise?

mosuzu · 18/06/2013 17:53

Sophie

Turniptwirl · 18/06/2013 18:20

I like both but I think Sophie is timeless whereas if Elodie is as popular as it seems to be on MN it will become a "2010s name"

looki · 18/06/2013 19:55

Sally Webster with her 'Soooofie' ruined the name Sophie for me :(

ManateeEquineOHara · 18/06/2013 20:04

Elodie is very pretty - the name Sophie has always made me think of a sofa.

I know of a late-teens Elodie so it is not entirely 'new'.

AmIGoingMad · 19/06/2013 12:08

I've just been looking through the top 100 lists and Sophie and Sophia have been there in top 10 ish for last few years but can't see Elodie anywhere on there. Maybe it's only popular on mumsnet?

acheekyvimto · 19/06/2013 12:22

Elodie is very pretty and certainly not common.

Sophie is a lot softer and more classic than Sophia. I have a feeling that Sophia will date very quickly.

AmIGoingMad · 19/06/2013 19:54

Yes that would make sense with Sophie being a pretty consistent top name and therefor not being easy to date. I think I'm leaning towards Elodie again though!

You can write Elodie on a calculator (310073) then turn upside down. We used to get through maths lessons doing that sort of thing. I'm glad to see pupils at my school are still doing it! How could you resist!?!

LadyEarth · 19/06/2013 20:39

My youngest has Elodie as a middle name and I have wished I pushed my DH for it to be her first name (she loves it too). Incidentally although her first name (Madeleine) could be shortened to Maddie it hardly ever is so Elodie needn't become Ellie :)

notadoctor · 19/06/2013 23:21

I love both! Maybe wait and meet her before you make the final decision?

AmIGoingMad · 20/06/2013 10:33

I've seen your other post! Yes maybe we'll have a front runner to go with but not be too set on it in case it doesn't really suit her.

OP posts:
AmIGoingMad · 20/06/2013 10:34

And I love the calculator trick!Grin
