Aubree or Aubrey?

NoRainNoRainbow · 14/06/2013 21:11

Posting on behalf of a friend....

Her DGM was Audrey, and has heard of Aubrey (think its American?)

What do we all think?

Would it be Aubrey, or Aubree? If Aubree would it have an accent over the last e? (We need our dunce caps on as we don't know what the accent over an e actually means/is pronounced/is appropriate Blush)

TIA

Aubrey, have heard it before, lovely.

meditrina · 14/06/2013 21:13

Aubrey - it's a variant of Auberon/Oberon, the king of the fairies.

ClaraOswald · 14/06/2013 21:13

I always thought Aubrey was a boys name?

rootypig · 14/06/2013 21:14

(and the accent would be acute - sloping from bottom left to top right - would go over the penultimate e and make it aub-ray)

meditrina · 14/06/2013 21:15

The French spell it Oberon or Auberon, btw.

devonsmummy · 14/06/2013 21:15

Aubrey

LittleBearPad · 14/06/2013 21:15

Aubrey is a boy's name

badtime · 14/06/2013 21:16

It's a boys' name. I usually like unisex names, but I really dislike Aubrey used for a girl.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2013 21:17

Aubrey is a boy's name, and IMO is awful for a girl.

meditrina · 14/06/2013 21:17

Sorry, that was a bit of a useless post: I meant that I don't think there is a further shortened version in French. But if there was, I think it would be would be Aubré (ée would inappropriately change the sex).

ExcuseTypos · 14/06/2013 21:19

I know a 5 year old Aubrey.

He's a boy.

badtime · 14/06/2013 21:19

If you want a variant of Audrey (which I do like), what about Audra, Audrea, Audrine, Audrina, Audriana?

booksandchoc · 14/06/2013 21:20

Absolutely love Aubrey for a little girl, and if I have a second I will be using it. I don't like Aubree but I hate alternative spellings of any name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/06/2013 21:20

Aubrey definitely.

But as others have said it's a variant of Auberon - who was king of the fairies.

You might think "but nobody would know that" but they will do.

meditrina · 14/06/2013 21:21

OP doesn't say the sex of the baby.

Aubrey is definitely a boys name.

CecyHall · 14/06/2013 21:22

Aubrey- reminds me if Aubrey

CecyHall · 14/06/2013 21:22

Oops, I clearly hadn't finished!

Anyway it reminds me of Aubrey Plaza who is awesome and female.

NoRainNoRainbow · 14/06/2013 21:23

Thank you all

She was thinking Aubrey Rose.

(Not keen on Aubree either, there was a little girl on tv with it spelt like this so we didnt know if this was right Blush)

Is it a boys name? It feels so feminine to me.

Audrey is much nicer for a girl.

rootypig · 14/06/2013 21:27

I'm really surprised people are so attached to genders for names. I know DC with straightforwardly other gender names (think James for a girl) and it's wonderful! who cares.

OP, Aubrey Rose is lovely.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/06/2013 21:29

rooty do you think Sophie is nice for a boy?

The thing with "genderless" names is that people actually just mean "boys names you can use on girls". It doesn't go the other way.

LittleBearPad · 14/06/2013 21:30

Audrey Rose is nicer though.

JRY44 · 14/06/2013 21:35

I know two Aubreys - both male

rootypig · 14/06/2013 21:35

well without wanting to derail the OP's thread Alis, that is imo about the legitimacy of so called male and female qualities and characteristics. Heaven forbid a man be tainted with something feminine.

I know some boys with girlish names, though not girls' names, you're right - but that doesn't put me off my approach - just think the world is wrong Grin Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/06/2013 21:37

rooty

Tis true,"boy" names become spectacularly unpopular once they've become common use for girls. I find this kind of thing really interesting, popularity of names and why etc.
