Aubree or Aubrey?

NoRainNoRainbow · 14/06/2013 21:11

Posting on behalf of a friend....

Her DGM was Audrey, and has heard of Aubrey (think its American?)

What do we all think?

Would it be Aubrey, or Aubree? If Aubree would it have an accent over the last e? (We need our dunce caps on as we don't know what the accent over an e actually means/is pronounced/is appropriate Blush)

TIA

Aubrey is a boy's name. I went to school with one. We called him Aubrey the Strawberry. Poor little sod. As a more mature person now I do like the name, but for a boy.

If she's having a girl then just go with Audrey.

Bluestocking · 14/06/2013 21:38

Aubrey is a boy's/man's name. Reminds me of Jack Aubrey, possibly the most manly man in literature! Most unsuitable for a girl and will make your friend look daft.

rootypig · 14/06/2013 21:50

yy Alis me too! I think people who choose boyish or boys' names for their girls (I have) are rejecting traditional forms of femininity, bluntly. That's acceptable in a broader sense ie outside names. The male embrace of femininity hasn't happened. Doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't!

sorry OP. fwiw DH is American and Aubrey for a woman in common in North America. I doubt anyone of our (based on your friend being of childbearing age) generation or the child's will be bothered. Cast off the shackles! Grin Grin

NoRainNoRainbow · 14/06/2013 22:03

Thank you rootypig the shackles have been cast off and wine has been poured (for me Grin)

Aubrey rose it is

And she will be known, to me, as Aubrey the strawberry from now on Grin

rooty

I must admit that these days I like polysyllabic and therefore usually "stereotypically" girly names these days, had I had a daughter about 4 years ago she would almost certainly have had a "throw the shackles off" kind of name. I was rather taken with Blake for a girl!

I find names generally speaking interesting, the impression and judgments people have or make etc.

OP - Though Aubreu is not my style, I have to say Aubrey the Strawberry is ridiculously cute!

rootypig · 14/06/2013 22:46

Aubrey the Strawberry! I'll drink to that! Wine

Alis should you ever find yourself with a wee girl to name, you could just do what I did and name her one thing (traditional girl name) and call her something else (which gets Confused and Shock at playgroup) Grin Grin

valiumredhead · 14/06/2013 22:48

I know an Aubrey,a little boy Smile

EleanorFarjeon · 14/06/2013 22:52

I love Aubrey, my parents had a dog called Aubrey and I've always loved the name. Their current dogs are Ambrose & Frith which I also love.

wizzler · 14/06/2013 22:56

Wasn't there a psychic thriller called "Audrey Rose"?
Stick to Aubrey the strawberry!

lilstar · 14/06/2013 23:05

The Aubrey I know is male.

bugsybill · 14/06/2013 23:27

I like it and much prefer it as a girls name.

Definitely Aubrey for spelling.

Aubrey rose is very nice together.

nooka · 15/06/2013 06:13

I like Aubrey for a boy and Audrey for a girl and not the other way around. I don't really like giving girls boys names, I think because it somehow suggests that girls names aren't good enough (or the more traditional idea that really you wanted a boy but are 'making do'). Not that I am suggesting that the OP's friend wanted a boy as it's a family name.

Plus why is everyone using Rose/Grace/May as middle names? Are these the Louise of the 2010s?

MummyPig24 · 15/06/2013 08:47

I prefer Aubrey to Aubree

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/06/2013 08:53

:o at poor little Aubrey the Strawberry's legacy to the world!

HahaHarrie · 15/06/2013 08:58

Aubrey is a boys name.

But then there is the 'Boy named Sue' - but that might be a lesson to what your friend is getting themself into! Wink

meditrina · 15/06/2013 09:04

Names do sometimes cross sex when they cross countries. Laurence, for example, if definitely female in Francophone countries. The use of boys names on girls is uncommon in UK and gets a mixed reaction at best. It's up to the family whether they can put up with that - though the family might be less aware than others as people are rarely blunt enough to say what they really think of a name to actual people in RL. But in cyberspace about a baby that isn't even OP's, it's possible to say that you just think it's wrong.

Fifi2406 · 15/06/2013 09:57

It's a boys name and is of French origin and does come from a name that means king of the fairies/ruler of the little people...American's made it a girls name. My son is called Aubrey and I call him Aubrey strawberry don't really see that's a bad nickname to be bullied over there are much worse! I love his name! HATE it for a girl, she should go with Audrey for a girl.

Elquota · 15/06/2013 10:01

Aubrey, although I'd assumed it was a boys name.

squoosh · 15/06/2013 16:43

I've only ever known male Aubreys but have noticed it's become very popular as a girls name in America. They've also turned Rory into a girls name too. Hmm

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2013 16:55

Rory a girl's name? I hope nobody tells my son!
