Hector or Edgar?

My partner favours Edgar and I favour Hector. We both would tolerate each others' choice.

I can't decide which to go for; really worried about getting it wrong and having regrets.

Edgar definitely for me. It's an elegant name whilst still being non fussy. Hector sounds a bit dorky to me.

KateCroydon · 11/06/2013 11:21

Neither.

littlepeas · 11/06/2013 11:21

Hector is awesome! It is my hypothetical 3rd boy's name! Not so keen on Edgar. Hero if Troy vs slightly boring bloke in King Lear - no contest!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 11:35

Hector that's what I think of when I hear Hector! I know that's because I'm 40 but still.

squoosh · 11/06/2013 11:37

Not crazy about either but at a push I'd pick Edgar.

Hector is beyond awful.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 11/06/2013 11:43

I like them both

Elquota · 11/06/2013 11:54

Hector

sonlypuppyfat · 11/06/2013 12:02

Sorry both awful, yes I thought of Hectors House too. It's funny when I was at school there was an Arthur in my class his life was made a misery for having such an old fashioned name now people are choising such names!

smable · 11/06/2013 12:05

Edgar for me as it shortens to Ed which gives your son an option to go by a more accepted name when he's older if he finds your choice is not to his taste.

bananaramma · 11/06/2013 12:31

Hector is awful. It means bully/tormentor - not a great meaning - and the nickname would be Heck?!

Edgar is ok but it wouldn't be my choice, sorry.

pygmy · 11/06/2013 12:55

Hector means 'defend' 'hold fast'. If you're referring to the rarely used verb hector, then that means pester. As does harry.

OP, why are you asking our opinions if you're not keen to hear my thoughts on the name Hector. I do think 'bully, tormentor' when I hear hector, but feel free to ignore me, of course.

littlepeas · 11/06/2013 16:00

I'm surprised by the reaction to Hector, as I think it is cool and making a comeback. As I said above, my immediate association is Troy - an underused, classic name with a bit of an edge.

Bowlersarm · 11/06/2013 16:03

Hector-definitely. Great name.

noddyholder · 11/06/2013 16:05

Love Edgar (its my middle name!)

TheYamiOfYawn · 11/06/2013 16:05

Hector, definitely. Hector are cute when little and sexy and heroic when grown-up.

Catbert4pm · 11/06/2013 16:06

"I'm a silly old Hector!" Smile

notanaxemurderer · 11/06/2013 16:07

Hector is fantastic. I know a little Hector.

No one these days uses 'hector' as a verb, other than my 87 year old grandfather.

samuelwhiskers · 11/06/2013 16:08

Hector, definitely!

Joskar · 11/06/2013 16:43

Hector. Definitely.

pygmy · 11/06/2013 20:54

Thanks for your comments. Any more?

Edgar. I find hector very drippy .

miffybun73 · 11/06/2013 21:04

Hector definitely.

I actually find Edgar very effete, drippy sounding.

After reading MrsBungle's post it just shows how names and our reaction to them are a very personal thing and you are best just going with what you like.

OhBuggerandArse · 11/06/2013 21:04

I love Hector.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/06/2013 21:04

Hector
