Hector or Edgar?

My partner favours Edgar and I favour Hector. We both would tolerate each others' choice.

I can't decide which to go for; really worried about getting it wrong and having regrets.

Edgar definitely for me. It's an elegant name whilst still being non fussy. Hector sounds a bit dorky to me.

Neither.

Hector is awesome! It is my hypothetical 3rd boy's name! Not so keen on Edgar. Hero if Troy vs slightly boring bloke in King Lear - no contest!

Hector that's what I think of when I hear Hector! I know that's because I'm 40 but still.

Not crazy about either but at a push I'd pick Edgar.

Sorry both awful, yes I thought of Hectors House too. It's funny when I was at school there was an Arthur in my class his life was made a misery for having such an old fashioned name now people are choising such names!

Edgar for me as it shortens to Ed which gives your son an option to go by a more accepted name when he's older if he finds your choice is not to his taste.

Hector is awful. It means bully/tormentor - not a great meaning - and the nickname would be Heck?!

Hector means 'defend' 'hold fast'. If you're referring to the rarely used verb hector, then that means pester. As does harry.

OP, why are you asking our opinions if you're not keen to hear my thoughts on the name Hector. I do think 'bully, tormentor' when I hear hector, but feel free to ignore me, of course.

I'm surprised by the reaction to Hector, as I think it is cool and making a comeback. As I said above, my immediate association is Troy - an underused, classic name with a bit of an edge.

I actually find Edgar very effete, drippy sounding.

After reading MrsBungle's post it just shows how names and our reaction to them are a very personal thing and you are best just going with what you like.
