No.

mummyloveslucy · 04/06/2013 20:45

I'm not expecting BTW, we are trying and therefore thinking of names. I just wondered what you all thought.

I met one! She referred to herself as Bo, and her mother corrected her to Boadicea. DH and I were knocked sideways Grin

My 8 yr old informs me it is now pronounced Boo Dick a. Not as beautiful to my ears as Boa d see a

Elquota · 04/06/2013 22:46

Why not? It's not really that different to names like Beatrice or Alicia.

OutragedFromLeeds · 04/06/2013 22:50

I knew one at school, she was one of about 9 children and they all had quite unusual names beginning with B.

nooka · 04/06/2013 22:53

Boadicea and Boudicca are two variants of the same name. The first is the Roman form and the second the Ancient British. So you would not pronounce Boadicea boo-dick-a. It's just that we now consider it more appropriate to use Boudicca as that's what the historical figure probably called herself.

I think Boudicca is a pretty fabulous name, but would not personally use it for a child Grin

Now I've got the Horrible Histories song about Boudicca stuck in my brain.

It's very catchy Grin

mikkii · 04/06/2013 22:58

Grin at earl grey, me too

gallicgirl · 04/06/2013 23:01

I'm fairly sure it means "bringer of war".

I love Boudicca but it's not a name to use.

AllegraLilac · 05/06/2013 00:18

Been pronounced Boo Dick A since the 1990s!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 05/06/2013 12:42

Boadicea/Boudicca was Queen of the ancient Briton Iceni tribe. IIRC, the Romans murdered her husband, raped her and her daughters and murdered her daughters. She vowed vengeance, raised the tribes and destroyed much of East Anglia, including razing the entire town of Colchester to the ground. She died in battle. I admire her greatly, but Im not sure Id want her name!

burberryqueen · 05/06/2013 12:45

it means 'Victoria' and the ancient British still has a version in Welsh, which is Buddug, and yes there are little girls in Wales with this name.(pron. Bith - ig)
But in answer to your question, no!

squoosh · 05/06/2013 12:53

Hell of a lot for a baby/girl/woman to carry off. A name like that would give me major expectations of its owner.

LanternGirl · 05/06/2013 14:58

Seriously?

raisah · 06/06/2013 05:17

My late mil would have carried off the name perfectly as she was a bit of a battle axe. We are culturally conditioned to want our daughters to be frilly princesses rather than warrior queens. There is something not right there, there is place in life for both.

Anjou · 06/06/2013 06:07

Taking away the history and just thinking about the sound of the name, Boadicea is too frilly for my taste but Boudicca is lovely. Easier to carry off, IMO. I think it would sound really good with a simple, one-syllable surname, e.g. Smith, Jones, White, Green.

It's obviously pretty distinctive & identifiable with one source, but nicer & easier to carry off than Cleopatra or Nefertiti, so why not!

LedaOfSparta · 06/06/2013 06:14

My baby dd isn't actually called Boudicca but that is what her brothers have nicknamed her.

We often shorten it to Boo Smile

fibrecruncher · 06/06/2013 10:49

I have to say I really kind of like it. Not sure I would have the cahones to name my child it though :)
