Hello,

some opinions on these names if baby 2 turns out to be a girl.
I know my names aren't to eveyone's taste but I'd like to know ones which you think sound nice / interesting (even if you'd never use them) as opposed to those which you consider completely awful.
Also, do any of these names have strong class / cultural / celebrity connotations I'm not aware of? Or are probably going to become very trendy soon?
I made the mistake of naming dd1 a name that was trending, and she now shares her name with several celebrity babies...not amused. I'm now in a panic about A. choosing the right name B. listening to DH's suggestions again! I really regret dd1's name but can't change it now.

Names we like:
Aurelia
Anastasia
Aurora (DH and I met spotting the northern lights so I feel it should be a middle name at least, the only problem is that small children can't pronounce it, i've asked a few! 'Rory' for short I suppose.)
Isolde (ee-ZOLD for anyone whose not heard it before.)
Gwenna / Gwendolyn
Clio

DH suggested Guinevere but I drew the arthurian line at Isolde!

I like names beginning with A. If anyone has any traditional british / welsh names that aren't popular at the moment I would appreciate the suggestions.

DH has struck Alexandra, Kerensa, Iris, Rosamond and Rowena from my list as apparently they are very much not to his taste.
I struck Seren off his because it's much too popular now, and Rosalind because it is becoming extremely popular.

Given your lovely story I'd definitely go for Aurora with the nn Rory Smile

As an obsessive Gilmore Girls fan I wanted to call DD Rory but DP ixnayed it Angry

Anastasia is very pretty too. As is Cleo but spelled Cleo rather than Clio.

FoofFighter · 29/05/2013 16:51

Aurora nn Rory is just lovely especially with the backstory to it :)

Choccyhobnob · 29/05/2013 16:54

Aurelia - like it (way better than Aurelie which just sounds like Orally)
Anastasia - quite like it, name of the girl in 50 shades of....but nobody will remember that in a few years.
Aurora -You should def use it for a middle name, especially with your love story!!
Isolde - don't love it but can't think of anything bad about it so it's just personal taste Smile
Gwenna / Gwendolyn - hmmm my least favourite
Clio - probably better as Cleo so it's different to the make of car Smile

MyNameIsSuz · 29/05/2013 17:03

I love love love Aurelia, it was on our list if DS had been a girl. Anastasia is nice too, plenty of different ways to shorten it.

MultipleMama · 29/05/2013 17:17

My Grandmother was called Gwendoline, so that's a personal favourite for. me.

Auurelia - I like it.
Anastasia - Not keen on it I'm afraid.
Aurora - Lovely name. Great story to tell her about.
Isolde - Don't like it, sorry.
Clio - Reminds me of the fish from Pinocchio.

jamtoast12 · 29/05/2013 17:23

I like A names but to be honest they all sound like names from barbie or disney movies, as a mother of two young girls I've heard of them all in some sort of kids film if that may influence you?

Not keen on Anastasia at all.... There's a girl in my dd class with that name and sadly everyone comments on how awful it is :( its also a common kids film?

Aurelia is better but very like aurora (obviously from sleeping beauty) but Gwen on its own is nice. Clio is fine but I think of cats? Sorry not trying to be overly negative but just that people reactions will be different :)

How about Pearl, Annabella, Clara, Romona, Amber, Agnes?

JojoMags · 29/05/2013 17:34

I like Anastasia - not awful at all. I know just one, who gets Anya as nn. Not so keen on Aurelia, because I just think Australia, or Clio, because I think clitoris (really sorry, but that's the honest association) followed by the car! Aurora is a lovely middle name, but a bit odd out-thereas a first name.

There was a thread here recently about Annika - more Scandi than British but pretty.

Isolde - too tragic heroine. Isadora?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/05/2013 17:52

Love Isolde and Gwendolyn. The others are mostly a bit too flowery for me and I don't like Clio. Agree with your dh about Alexandra and Kerensa but think Isis is quite nice.

AllegraLilac · 29/05/2013 17:52

I'd go for Cleo Aurora! I love the meaning for your family.

samuelwhiskers · 29/05/2013 18:07

Like Aurora, Anastasia and Cleo with an "e" rather than "i" as it reminds me of a little Renault car.....

MadameJosephine · 29/05/2013 18:16

Love Isolde but I thought it was pronounced is-old

How about Igraine (ee-grain)? I once came across a little girl named Igraine and thought it was a fabulous name

Blanketsandpillows · 29/05/2013 18:18

I really love Aurora and Isolde.

barnet · 29/05/2013 18:18

Lovely:
Aurelia
Aurora (rory)
Gwendolyn

Neutral:
Isolde

Not keen:
Clio

RaRaZ · 29/05/2013 18:28

Isolde I thought was pronounced 'Is-oll-duh' as in Tristan & Isolde?? At least that's what I was taught in Classics many years ago...

SGJ · 29/05/2013 18:45

Aurora is lovely but then I'm biased as I know a lovely girl called Aurora and her mum calls her Rory.

Anwen and Aeron are pretty Welsh names that you don't come across often, and I used to know someone called Auriette, which is pretty and unusual.

From an Irish background, what about Aine? It's promounced 'Aunya' and is strong and delicate at the same time Smile

Sanjifair · 29/05/2013 19:05

I think Aurora is really nice. The Aurora I know of (who lives in the states) is known as Rory.

DessieLou · 29/05/2013 19:25

I'd go for Aurora (love nn Rory!) or Anastasia (stealing this although dp is guaranteed to veto it!). The story behind Aurora is just lovely.
How about Ariella, Anya or Angelica?

FobblyWoof · 29/05/2013 19:59

Aurora has always been my guilty pleasure name. I love it to bits, but I can't imagine calling a child it. Then again, I'm one for more mainstream names. I love it though, and I think it's especially lovely given your story

AndWhenYouGetThere · 29/05/2013 19:59

Aurora is beautiful.

EugenesAxe · 29/05/2013 20:05

I like Isolde the best; actually I think that's a really beautiful name.

I don't like Anastasia; unlike Jack (!) I do think that sounds chavvy.

The others I like. Clio is a muse isn't she? So a bit off topic if you want a British name.

I've always loved Angharad (as it sounds; stress on HA), nn Harry, which is of Welsh origin.

I like Aurora and Isolde, although I don't see anything wrong with the others.

Personally, my favourite names beginning with A are Artemis and Astrid, although neither are British.

Tickledyellow · 29/05/2013 20:16

How can you use anything else other than Aurora with such a beautiful love story... I am a die hard romantic. She will also love telling people about it as she grows older. You need look no further for a name!
