Any thoughts on this name? How would you pronounce it? She would have Cleo as a nickname..

It's not one I've ever heard of before - looks like a mash up of Cleo and Leonie, rather than a name that stands on its own. Cleo is nice - I had Clio on my short list.

EarlGreyTeabag · 22/05/2013 13:11

I think it's really pretty. I'd pronounce it CleeOHnee.

Squarecrisps · 22/05/2013 13:12

It's a Greek name, so it's definitely not made up - means famous, not a great meaning, but wouldn't be picking it for that reason.

Yes, I was thinking it would be CleeOhNee. Thanks!

Leonie is lovely, Cleo is lovely, (crumpet - Clio was on my girl list too! But DH nixed it due to the stupid Renault car)... But to me Cleonie sounds like a made up name, even if it actually isn't.

MerryMarigold · 22/05/2013 13:15

I immediately thought it was made up from Cleo and Leonie! [I think most people will]. I like it too, but prefer Cleo. She may also be constantly called Leonie as it is similar but more well known. My dd is frequently called Melissa because it sounds like her name, but is NOT her name.

crumpet · 22/05/2013 13:15

Smile there do seem to be a lot of Cleonies on google...

Agree with the pronuniation though.

crumpet · 22/05/2013 13:16

(it also appears to mean "glory of the father")

Squarecrisps · 22/05/2013 13:18

Thanks guys! Having looked into it further, it seems like the "ie" ending is an Irish version of the Greek name Cleone - which I also like. Hmmm....would you still think it looked made up if you saw "Cleone"?

BunnyLebowski · 22/05/2013 13:20

Cleonie is absolutely not an Irish name.

Clíodhna is and it's a much nicer name in my (admittedly Irish) opinion.

MerryMarigold · 22/05/2013 13:21

No, but I would think it was Clee-own. I know Phoebe has that ending, but is more well known and the oe makes it obviously Greek.

Squarecrisps · 22/05/2013 13:22

Cliodhna is lovely! Don't really feel we can go for such a gaelic name though, not being Irish and living in the UK (though our surname is Irish)

Hmm, yes, good point about the pronunciation changing! Maybe will have to steer clear. we're really struggling with girls names, just can't seem to decide on one, and thought I'd cracked it, but maybe not!

I adore Cleo, not so keen on Cleonie.

ShadeofViolet · 22/05/2013 13:26

My DD has a Gaelic name and we're not Irish.

Gwennan · 22/05/2013 13:39

Thought it was made up too - a mash up of Leonie and Cleo. I'd pronounce it like a combination of the two. I much prefer the two individual names to Cleonie.

DribbleWiper · 22/05/2013 17:17

Actually, it's Cleopatra that means "glory to her father" (hence the 'patra' bit).

The Greek word for fame is 'kleos' and it's masculine.

I mean, go ahead with Cleonie if you like, but just bear in mind that name meaning books/websites often talk absolute crap.

Teapot13 · 22/05/2013 18:20

I thought it was made up too, but don't let that put you off if you know the TRUTH!

What about Cloelia/Clelia?

DribbleWiper · 22/05/2013 19:00

Just looked up Cloelia - mythical super-brave Roman woman. Quite cool, but pronounced 'Cloy-lia', which is too much like cloying for my liking.

EarlGreyTeabag · 22/05/2013 19:39

Cloelia reminds me of coeliac disease...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/05/2013 19:41

Sorry but I don't like it. It sounds like the name for a car or a type of detergent.

redrubyshoes · 22/05/2013 19:49

Cleonia

Sounds like a mixture of Cleo/Fiona/Leonie/Meonia and an advert for bleach from the 1930's.

Sorry. Not sure........

Meonia is pronounced May-On Ire (to rhyme with wire). It means 'The Great One' or 'I am one' in anagram form.

RainSunWind · 22/05/2013 19:52

I hear that it is a real name but, honestly, it does sound like you have combined Cleo and Leonie...

Cleo is great on its own!

Boggler · 22/05/2013 19:56

Cleone is a welsh name pronounced Clay-O-nay and I love it. Smile

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2013 20:07

I like Clio best.

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2013 20:08

Cleo! I mean, not the small French car!
