Nope, I think it would get pretty irritating having to correct people all the time.

KobayashiMaru · 03/05/2013 18:12

Wouldn't most people say Lie-la? Lion is not lee-on, like is not leek.....

BikeRunSki · 03/05/2013 18:15

Ermm no, because the letters "Lila" do not make the sound "Leela" but "Lie-la".

starfishmummy · 03/05/2013 18:21

No. She will spend a lifetime correcting people and wishing she was called Jane

ChewingOnLifesGristle · 03/05/2013 18:25

No. Agree about the correcting likely to become wearing.

idalia · 03/05/2013 18:27

How would you prounanced name Lisa?

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 03/05/2013 18:28

Ah good point OP. But then again how would you pronounce Liza?

CajaDeLaMemoria · 03/05/2013 18:30

No. But I do know a Leela. Named after Futurama, I presume.

Bonsoir · 03/05/2013 18:33

"Leela" is a horrible name.

Cloverer · 03/05/2013 18:34

I think if you want Leela I would spell it Leela, Lela or Lelah.

Lila - L-ai-la

Leila - L-ay-la

MyNameIsSuz · 04/05/2013 09:15

It's German for purple, and that's pronounced like leela. I guess anyone German would automatically pronounce it that way? That's not terribly helpful is it...

EuroShaggleton · 04/05/2013 09:17

I like Leela. But I prefer Lila (pronounced Lye-la).

devonsmummy · 04/05/2013 09:20

Only lila I know is Lie-la

andadietcoke · 04/05/2013 09:21

I know a Leela - spelt like that.

AuntieStella · 04/05/2013 09:24

Leela would be the way to spell it in UK (Doctor Who influence?)

Swanlike · 04/05/2013 09:27

I have a Leila, which is pronounced Leela, in a similar way that Sheila is pronounced Sheela. It's a family name and has always been pronounced that way. People often think it's pronounced Layla as that's a more common name.

JohnSnowsTie · 04/05/2013 09:29

I used to know a Leila who pronounced it Leela.

lljkk · 04/05/2013 09:32

I would spell it Leela if I wanted it said Leela.

DeputyDeputyChiefOfStaff · 04/05/2013 09:33

I knew someone at primary school whose name was pronounced Leela, but I can't remember how she spelt it. I always thought it was a pretty name.

magpieC · 04/05/2013 09:33

I know a Lila pronounced Leela - her parents are Austrian and, as has been said, it's German for purple.

cantreachmytoes · 04/05/2013 09:41

I know a Lila pronounced Leela. It didn't occur to me that you'd say it any other way - and she does not have big problems with it. The way to make the "I" sound "ih" would be to write it Lilla.
As its a name of Arabic origin, there isn't a correct English way of writing it anyway, so best keep it simple.

(I have a friend called Anna. Simple name, right? She has to often spell it so that there are two "Ns" and to make sure it ends with and "a" not an "e".)

Swanlike · 04/05/2013 09:46

So would you all assume that Sheila should be pronounced Shayla? The name, pronunciation and spelling have been in my family for at least 4 generations.

galwaygirl · 04/05/2013 09:48

It's also the Swedish for purple and pronounced Leela too.
I think it depends where you live, the the UK people would probably say Lie-la but elsewhere in Europe you might get Leela.

wigglesrock · 04/05/2013 10:32

I know a Liela pronounced Leela. If I saw the name written down I'd ask how to pronounce it, I'd have 3 different ways. People usually only need telling once, I have a Sofia, she's almost 8 and we had a few what now pronunciations a few times but certainly not enough to piss either her or me off.

wigglesrock · 04/05/2013 10:34

or Lila even Blush I can't use my phone - touch screen and fat fingers - the enemy of technology
