Leela makes me think of futrama! It's quite nice spelt like that.

I would assume that Lila would be pronounced like lilac - same root word I guess?

custardismyhamster · 04/05/2013 14:21

Friend has just named her daughter Mila (nicknamed Smila, obviously that caught on but it's very sweet!) pronounced My-la, like Lila would be. However, because of Mila Kunis, everyone thinks it's Mee-La. oops.

MakingAnotherList · 04/05/2013 14:30

I would pronounce it Leela.
I would do so because of Lilo and Stitch Blush

raisah · 06/05/2013 08:16

Leela is an Indian girls name and is spelt & pronounced as such. if you want people to pronounce it as Leela then spell it that way to avoid the constant mispronounciation. Leela is a name in its own right.

Coffee1Sugar · 06/05/2013 11:40

I know a Leila who pronounces it as "leela"

SailorJupiter · 06/05/2013 11:46

I know a lila pronounced lie-la and it's mispronounced more often than not, she gets leela, layla and lill-a all the time, rarely lie-la first time!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/05/2013 11:48

Also know a Leila (leela)

nonamenewname · 10/05/2013 12:38

I wanted to have Lila (pronounced 'lie-la'), but I was fairly certain this would be "wrong": I know two Lilas (pronounced 'lee-la') - one Spanish, one Swiss. Clearly there's not one right way, and I agree with the pp who said that the pronunciation you like will prob be assumed everywhere but the UK!

(Btw, I didn't have Lila, but that's because I had a boy instead Grin)

Littlehousesomewhere · 10/05/2013 12:51

I think Lila would be pronounced Lilla.

I think Lyla is pronounced Lie-la.

I think Leila and Layla are pronounced Lay-la.

I think Leela would be pronounced Lee-la.

Saying that, people would eventually get use to the pronunciation. So calling Lila 'Lee-la' will be fine.

BackforGood · 10/05/2013 13:00

I do think she would have to go through life correcting people on a daily basis, which isn't something I would wish upon any of my dc.

Cookethenook · 10/05/2013 15:52

I don't know anyone in real life, but the pronunciation 'Leela' reminds me of Futurama. I think it's lovely though.

siluria · 10/05/2013 16:29

I know a Leila pronounced Leela. She loves her name.

narmada · 10/05/2013 22:33

I love Lila, pronounced lee-la, and know several. Go for it !

LiloLils · 11/05/2013 07:43

My name is lyla, pronounced lie-la. I get all sorts of mispronounciations all the time but its kind of funny. I've got to the point where I no longer correct people. Then laugh my arse off when they finally realise their mistake after calling me Leela for months.

For the record I love my name as its unusual. It's Arabic for "beautiful night"

LiloLils · 11/05/2013 07:47

Oh and in answer to your original post, personally I would go for the name that sounds most like the spelling. So Leela for Leela. There's no need to cause undue confusion on you LO's name...which will last a lifetime, I promise!

nooka · 11/05/2013 17:21

In my family there is s small Lila pronounced Lie-la and a small Mila pronounced like Miller. I've not heard that either of them have any particular problems.

Leela to me is very Futerama now, although I loved the Dr Who character (and Louise Jamieson).

hurricanemum · 11/05/2013 17:23

I taught a girl - pronounced as you want and spelt Leala

Wouldntyouliketoknow · 11/05/2013 18:29

I always assumed Lila was pronounced Lee-la Blush It's like Mila.

I'd go for it - Lila looks nicer than Leela and no matter how you spell it someone will always get it wrong IME!
