I know 2 kingstons, both Jamaican.

This thread is making me feel uncomfortable.

Not keen on Kingston as it immediately makes me think of Kingston upon Thames rather than Kingston, Jamaica. And it just sounds a bit odd to call a person that. You may as well call them Surbiton or Morden.

merrymouse · 04/05/2013 11:41

I think its difficult to give somebody a place name of somewhere in the UK, because its either going to sound pretentious if its somewhere 'posh', or it's just going to sound a bit odd if its somewhere ordinary, like Kingston.

I lived in Kingston upon Thames for many years and parts of it are lovely, but I would be thinking of the one way system and the Bentalls centre.

You could get away with it if it was very obviously alluding to Kingston Jamaica, but I think that would be hard if your child had a British accent.

OP - were you anywhere near Glasgow today?

FoofFighter · 04/05/2013 20:55

Kingston is a common name where I am from in the Midlands, even in white people.

Bit harsh that so many are calling it a ridiculous name Sad

(Kingy however is Confused )
