I'm struggling to find "the one". Ideally I'd like something which goes with DS's name, which we love. DS's name is:

  • Celtic (our DCs have have strong Scottish & Welsh heritage, and also Irish if you go a bit further back).
  • pre-Christian
  • has an interesting story attached
  • is not a top-100 name

DD's name doesn't have to meet all (or any!) of those criteria, but it'd be nice if it did.

Probably totally outing myself as a hippy at heart! But I have this image of her as a windswept, independent young girl standing on a hill, out in the elements, leaning into the wind (no idea where this image came from, but it's persisted in my head while pregnant). I also had a dream in which her name was Estelle, and also Star. I wouldn't use either of these in RL, but the meaning star is nice.

Back to reality, we had a 4D scan. She looks like her brother - very full lips. When I saw her the word "rosebud" pupped into my mind, although this is not something I'd use in RL.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I actually really like Estelle. Estella would be pretty too!

I believe Danica was suggested upthread, a great name. It's Old Norse and means "morning star." I also knew a little Danica and she was awesome.

Good luck!

Sorry - nn Leaf, not non... although I have heard of Non used as a girls' name in Wales. Not sure if it was a nn too though!

Gwennan · 09/04/2013 11:01

Orla, not Oral too. Predictive text - you fail me!

KathySeldon · 09/04/2013 12:54

Oooo - Bonnie. I like that.

Weescottie · 09/04/2013 21:34

How about Ailsa, Rhona or Morven?

formicaqueen · 09/04/2013 23:16

Stella means star.

IroningBoredDaily · 09/04/2013 23:27

Nia or the variant Nyah have lovely meaning - Purpose.

wiltingfast · 10/04/2013 09:07

Aisling? Means dream

Rosaleen?

umbrellahead · 10/04/2013 09:23

Rosaline (Rose-eh-leen) - it's a medieval (Irish?) variant of Rosalind and, IMO, is beautiful.

umbrellahead · 10/04/2013 09:24

Missed the last post there - wilting beat me to it with Rosaleen.

Just goes to show what a lovely name it is that two of us mentioned it in a row Wink

TalkativeJim · 10/04/2013 09:30

Llinos is Welsh for linnet - the little brown bird. So you could go for Linnet, which I think is a wonderful, magical name for a girl, especially if you've ever read the Green Knowe childrens' books.

Briallen is another Welsh name meaning primrose. Ok, it has the ll sound but at least not at the beginning, so you'd end up with most people pronouncing it Bree-athlen- probably manageable! That could be your Rose name. Bree for short.

Non is indeed a proper name. She was St. David's mother!

Other lovely names which you could describe as 'Celtic'

Merryn
Cadi
Ishbel
Hawys
Haf (prn. Harv- means Summer though, maybe not right for a spring baby!)
Olwen

Definitely more of a middle name choice (!) but lovely if you want something with 'meaning' - how about Loveday? Cornish, from the day of reconciliation between enemies.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

40+1 here. Still no nearer to a name.

From the posts above:

Rowan, thanks, I'd forgotten about Rowan. I did think of that before. I'll add it to the maybe list. It does seem a bit mainstream compared to DS's. Does that matter? I dunno!

Estelle - I do love this name but DP not at all keen. (Gave me a look like I'd just suggested something bonkers and said "no way"!)

I love Nia, and there's a great legend behind the name. However in that legend, DS's name is Nia's lover. It would be like calling your DCs Romeo and Juliet!

Elin - hmm, I'll have a think about it :)

Not Oral Wink

Rosaleen / Rosaline are nice but I'm not keen on the NN Rose.

Picky aren't I?!

Lucia (they pronounce it luucheeah rather than loo_sha)

Talia
Thais
Friday
And hermione

missmaybe · 12/04/2013 12:03

Stella - means star
Lena - means light

missmaybe · 12/04/2013 12:06

Oh, and Ysolde - I just think this is beautiful!

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 12/04/2013 12:06

Rosalind nn Rozzie instead of rose?

fairieswearboots · 12/04/2013 12:28

Aiedail - have seen it spelt Edel - pronounced ay-u-dul- from the celtic legend of the goddess of the moon and stars, meaning starsong.

Not as unusual, but i love Meabh/ Maeve - warriorlike queen of the fairies

soontobeslendergirl · 12/04/2013 12:30

Just googled a bit on Celtic mythology/legends and came up with the following, apologies if they have been suggested before:

Rhiannon
Morrigan
Aibell
Áine
Ériu
Olwen
Isolda

or maybe Minerva?

If you like Rowan and the nature type names, I know a girl Logan which makes a lovely change.

MineOrk · 12/04/2013 12:32

Sula

Will try to think of some not "S" Smile

soontobeslendergirl · 12/04/2013 13:09
