Euan or Ewan

We're expecting DC1 in August and have a shortlist of 8 boys names which we're mulling over (don't get me started on girls names, list is currently 41).

One of the current favourites is Euan/Ewan. But which spelling would you use?

We live in Scotland and have Scottish roots on both sides, but may not stay living up here long term if that helps!

Definitely the U. but that might be because of associations with a certain sheep

keen to hear the girls' names!

Don't even go there with the girls names! DH has one he loves (his grandmas name) which I think is ok but not what I want, more than happy to use it as a middle name. I can't seem to find any I love, just lots I like. We're hoping it's a boy as we're pretty confident we could chose any of the 8 and we'd be happy!

Definitely Euan.

Was top of my name list for DS2, though sadly DH didn't like it.

OP I was in the same situation with girls' names and just thought ehh, we'll be fine if we have a boy.

DD wasn't named for two months! and I'm still not sure about it so we call her something else!

Euan - I am always tempted to pronounce Ewan as Evan for some reason

Ewan, because I believe it is the scottish version. Euan is the Irish spelling.

Euan is Irish?

I prefer Ewan.

It seems less fussy.

ok so a bit of a split camp, I think I prefer Euan but I didn't want to saddle him with a name everyone spells wrong every time (the surname is bad enough with that!)

my ds gets his name spelled wrong a lot i.e. they put the 'U' in instead of 'W' - and thats with us living in Scotland

Oh and back to girls names, very bizarrely my sons best friend at nursery was called Luan.

I always though that it was a gorgeous girls name and would have loved it if I didnt already have a Ewan - that would have confused people!!

I see why people are saying Ewan is the Scottish spelling (more commonly used), but it isn't. Euan/Ewan are both variations used in Scotland of the same name that is Eoghan in Ireland (and I've seen this in Gaelic speaking Scotland, too), Owen in Wales etc... And there's no w in Scottish Gaelic, so i'd guess the w is just a more modern anglicisation.

Both spellings are well used and nice, just don't think it's as clear cut as one being Scottish and one Irish (like AThing I was a bit )

Thanks everyone. Good to know it's not totally clear cut and DH and I aren't missing something! We'll leave it written on the list with both spellings for now and see which one grows on us.

No matter what we do, someone in the family will tell us it's the wrong one I'm sure!
