Which (if any!) is the correct pronunciation?

Tal-es-in

Or

Tal-uh-sin?

Thanks

I think tal ee ess in

Umlauf · 01/03/2013 12:23

On Child of Our Timethey were pronouncing it to rhyme with Alison. That's the only time I'd heard the name

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 01/03/2013 12:28

Oh,yes, that must be where that particular pronunciation has seeped into my subconscious from...

But I have a feeling it isn't the correct one...

This is my Welsh friend's son's name and they pronounce it Tally-ESS-un.

Gwennan · 01/03/2013 12:50

I've heard it pronounced tal-YES-in

HorryDrelincourt · 01/03/2013 13:01

The only one I have known was tally-ESS-in

mejon · 01/03/2013 14:37

Gwennan has it right - it is Tal-YES-in. Tally-ess-in is like pronouncing Pontypandy as Pontee-pandy Wink.

Nonsensical · 01/03/2013 15:04

Happy st David's day!

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 01/03/2013 19:51

Tal-ee-ESS-in is over-pronuncing?

Tal-es-in is under-pronuncing?

And Tal-YES-in is correct?

With the 'YES' in the middle said in the same way as 'yes'? It sounds odd said that way to my English ear....or perhaps it's just my accent Grin
Or more like Tal-yuhs-in? and Confused

simonthedog · 01/03/2013 19:59

QuickQuickSloe · 01/03/2013 20:01

Tal ee essay in here in South Wales. wanted this name for DS

QuickQuickSloe · 01/03/2013 20:02

Sorry auto correct fail.

Tal ee ess in.

2kidsintow · 01/03/2013 20:05

North Wales here.

Tal ee es in.

(Local school of that name)

mejon · 01/03/2013 20:16

Frigg - I think what you've said about over and under-pronounciation is spot on. The 'yes' is just as you would say it in English.

thegreylady · 01/03/2013 20:19

It is a great name however it is pronounced :)

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 01/03/2013 20:22

I really like Tal-ee-es-in,and Tal-es-in...both roll nicely off my tongue.
It seems like Tal-ee-es-in is at least the correct pronunciation in some parts...

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 01/03/2013 20:23

Though the more I say Tal-Yes-in,the more I like it. Grin

LastDaughterofKrypton · 02/03/2013 06:11

Gwennan has the right of it. Tal-yes-in. Think of the 'ie' being pronounced the same as in Ieuan.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 02/03/2013 08:14

Ahhh,I see,thankyou Last that's v helpful!

i would have said Tal-ee-san

slipshodsibyl · 02/03/2013 09:00

Taliesin was a sixteenth century Welsh poet (male). Tal yes in is correct welsh pronunciation. Tall ee esin would be an anglicised pronunciation, where the speaker is unaware of the sound 'y' makes in Welsh. ( it's a kind of ur' sound)
