Children named after literary characters

My friends eldest son age 8 is called Thorin after Thorin Oakenshield the head dwarf in The Hobbit.

Scarlett after Scarlett O`Hara in Gone with the Wind :)

Glad to see some more Diggory love as well! I badly wanted to call DS2 Diggory but my husband was having NONE of it, even though he is the CS Lewis fan not me.

I also liked Soren (Soren Lorenson!), Jude and Gabriel.

When I was younger I wanted to use Gilbert (Anne of Green Gables) and Kizzy/Keziah (The Diddakoi). And I like Lyra but there are just too many L--a names in the family already.

DS is Frederick, partly for Captain Wentworth from Persuasion. Because the character is honourable, persistant, and constant. You see we thought about this!

DD is Anwen and I can't tell you how many people have nodded at me in a knowing way and said 'Lord of the Rings fan then?' To be fair to them it is very close to Arwen.

juniper9 - well I have a 4yr DS called Atticus and I've never had a negative reaction to his name. So many people have said what a wonderful name it is for a boy and I've never had anybody going...errr what? Maybe depends on where you live. We live in a multicultural area in a city centre, and there are far more unusual and unheard of names around here. I would feel totally comfortable shouting his name in the playground . But I guess if most kids were called Harry, George and Jack, then I guess Atticus might stand out a bit.
But honestly it is a lovely name and we've never regretted it for a second!

I adore Atticus, it was my first choice for my son, but my DH wavered at the last second and we went for Arthur instead, but just love it and all if its connotations! My little girl is called Ophelia, but hopefully not quite as tragic as her literary namesake!

Not really, she's named after Miss Bennet of course.

I am called Pip (Philippa) after the male protagonist of Great Expectations! My mum obviously didn't care that I was the wrong gender! That said, I do like my name, and I am glad she didn't go for Estella instead!

My dc all also have names from books, but I will totally out myself if I say what they are!

We like Amelia if baby3 is a girl.. anyone remember Naughty Amelia Jane?

DD is Cora; she wasn't exactly named after the character in Last of the Mohicans , but DH was reading it at the time and it probably led us to consider it when it might not have come to mind otherwise.

My hypothetical daughters are called Constance (from the Three Musketeers) and Rowena (from Ivanhoe). I like 19th-century historical adventure stories.

If DS2 was a girl, she would have been called Arya (Song of Ice and Fire aka Game of Thrones).

My son's middle name is Alexander after Alexander the Great as written ny Mary Renault.

I didn't use the name, but seriously considered Linnet from the Green Knowe books for a girl.

Yami, I also have an Alexander, this one after the character in Children of Green Knowe, and I am always trying to big up Linnet on these boards. No girls so I can't use it.

I remembered a couple of others I wanted to use -- Sorrel from the Noel Streatfeild book Curtain Up and Charis from the Georgette Heyer book Frederica (the latter not after the character specifically, but it was the first time I'd encountered the name and I liked it).

mrsmind wow, at last someone who doesn't give me a weird look about loving Georgette Heyer THAT much! Do you get people making 'hilarious' jokes about The Odd Couple as well? I'd never heard of such a thing until after I'd named the second one and it was too late!

I almost got lumbered with Cleone after a character from another Heyer book but managed to dodge that bullet. Just about. :)

My daughter is named India after a character in Gone with the Wind. She would've been Scarlett but that had become too popular by the time she was born. Her middle names are Juliet as in Romeo and Juliet and Elizabeth after Miss Bennett.

Although DS is two and after we agreed on a name neither of us was crazy about, he admits we should have gone for Atticus
