what do you think about using same initials for siblings?

Can't decide if I like this idea or not! The girl name we like best for dc3 has the same initials as DD. Wondering whether to pick to a boy's name with the same initials as DS.

Keep thinking it would be so convenient for labelling uniform!

But possibly also awkward with mail etc.

My dd has initials EET and ds is EKT (including middle names) i.e. their first names start with the same letter. Mind you, me and dh have the same letter at the start of our names too.

simplesusan · 21/02/2013 14:03

I think it is fine.

Disclaimer: None of of have the same initials so I have no idea if it can cause problems with post etc.

NomNomDePlumPudding · 21/02/2013 14:05

you will continually be calling them by the wrong name. (mind you, dds have different initials and i still mix up their names, so...)

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/02/2013 14:07

I mix my cat and ky DS up all the time Blush they have a similar type of name, but not the same initial!

DH and DS already share an initial too.

Hmm. Still dithering!

there's nothing wrong with it, but I personally wouldn't do it.
I like to know that the post that arrives can't be mixed up if the middle initial isn't used.

Startail · 21/02/2013 15:31

my sister and I have the same first initial. The only post DCs ever get is birthday cards, so unless they are twins, that's not a problem.

I think DS and I might have opened each others post once or twicein 16 years of living together and even then it was only you have 55p in your savings account or a Christmas card.

Modern DCs are hardly going to send each other love letters, the FB, text or ring.

Anything medical or for scholl always says to the parent of anyway.

kilmuir · 21/02/2013 15:32

Chavvy

Hmm not sure. Depends how many children. Two or three is ok ish any more than that and you risk looking like one of those bonkers families with hundreds of children and a slight tendency to believe consipiracy theories.

usualsuspect · 21/02/2013 15:35

I've got the same initials as my brother, cant say it has ever caused a problem.

weegiemum · 21/02/2013 15:35

We're fairy mixed - dh is HJT, I'm SMT, dd1 is KMT, Ds is APRT and dd2 is RJT. we don't share any names, any family names they have are from grandparents or great grandparents.

When I was a teen, my step mum (I lived with dad and DSM) had the same first initial as my sister. Never was an issue.

Startail · 21/02/2013 15:35

Definitely not chavvy, unless they all begin with K or C then I can think of some debatable sets.

5madthings · 21/02/2013 15:36

My dp has the same initial as his sister and his mum and non if them have a middle name, think A Brown. So for post etc he found it massively annoying.

MrsReiver · 21/02/2013 15:36

I have the same initials as two of my brothers and one of my sisters and two of my other brothers have the same initials. It's never caused any confusion, apart from just now when I was trying to work it out.

eachtigertires · 21/02/2013 15:36

I know someone whose whole family has the same first initial, I don't think they find it a problem.

sooperdooper · 21/02/2013 15:36

I have the same initials as my brother, it's no big deal and it's never caused any issues whatsoever - tbh I doubt my mum & dad even considered it anything to wonder about, I think you're over thinking it!

MrsReiver · 21/02/2013 15:37

Definitely not chavvy, unless they all begin with K or C then I can think of some debatable sets.

Shit....

chickabilla · 21/02/2013 15:39

My 2 DS share the same first initial, different middle initials. The only other name that was a contender would have given DS2 the exact same initials as DH. This baby will have a different first initial as it was not intentional last time! No problems so far and great for naming uniform but they are only 6 and 2.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/02/2013 15:49

Ha!

Changing it a bit to not to out myself, but

Me: NE Smith
DH: RE smith
DD: MA Smith
DS: RC Smith

(so mostly different so far)

Then baby 3 could be
Girl: MA Smith
Boy: RC smith

I'm 99% that this will be the last baby, so there'd only be 2 people in the house with exactly the same initials.

I think it's fine for two siblings to share the same first initials but it starts getting a bit weird if there's 3 or 4 of them. It's better if the sounds are different - like an Emily and an Elliot or a Charlotte and a Christopher. I think I'd give the children different middle names though and certainly wouldn't go out of my way to match them.

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 21/02/2013 16:10

Me, my brother and sister are all the same initials - first name and surname (not middle names.) It wasn't done deliberately but never caused any problems apart from very occasionally getting post mixed up.

amck5700 · 21/02/2013 16:12

I have two boys both with the same initial - a C! and both sound like a K!

Can't say it causes any issues - I'll be kicking them out at 16 so mail shouldn't be an issue.

....and seriously how much actual mail does anyone get these day? Never mind how much they will get when it actually matters.

OH and I share first initials too - all of it was unintentional but if OH hadn't insisted on a gaelic spelling for No2 son they would have different initials

amck5700 · 21/02/2013 16:13

...and neither names are Chavvy imo.

MadameJosephine · 21/02/2013 16:19

My grandparents, my parents, me, my exH, my brother and my 2 dc all have the same first initial. It's never caused any problems. Does that make me a Chav? I swear I've never left the house in my pyjamas, not even once!

nickelbabe · 21/02/2013 16:41

ah, see, i wouldn't do both initials the same even if the first was the same.

That would just cause postal chaos!
Can you change the spellings of the middle names to make them different initials?
