We really love the name Baxter

But have stupidly told people who keep trying to convince us otherwise.
We said we loved it before we were even trying for a baby (watched the Ian drury film and when we heard he had named his son that we both thought it was a brilliant and unusual name), and now we are 5 months pregnant we are starting to doubt ourselves. Everyone keeps saying 'its a dogs name' or 'that's a soup'.
But we still love it! Should we stick to our guns or cave to pressure?
He would be Baxter Sturge if that helps your judgement in any way?

ZOMBIE THREAD!

If you love it, use it. And I wouldn't say that about every name. It's not awful sounding or OTT quirky like SugarCloud or Xylophone or some such. It's a a well known, easy to spell and pronounce, surname and surnames are sometimes used as first name. Nothing more to see here. Plus Baxter Drury is a pretty good musician in his own right.

Oops!! Didn't realise Baxter is probably about 9 now!!

It's the double ster sound that puts me off.
Surname type names are not my personal taste but I find Baxter quite cute but sadly not with your surname.
Hopefully one of the other names from your list will grow on you... and obv keep it to yourself

I too need to know if op named her son Baxter. I like it. Baxter is only associated with a dogs name for the older mnetters surley. kids wouldn't immediately think baxter was a dogs name. At least its an actual name I once knew of a child named Girly. she'll be about 9 years old now too.

I think Baxter is cool. You’re brave to put it on MN. I’ve got our probable boy’s name picked out but will never post it here because I don’t want my love of it tarred by the opinions of random Internet forum users.

We’ve been looking for names that everyone will know how to spell, they’re HIGHLY likely to be the only child in their class with that name, the latest ONS data shows double figure (max) number of births for the latest year of records. Baxter would fit ideally into our criteria

These zombie threads are annoying!!!!! Always forget to check. Can’t MN put warnings up somehow?

I read this thread several years ago and did actually name my son Baxter!!! A little hesitant at first but now I definitely love it! He is the only one at preschool and probably the whole city with this name while his first daycare had four Olivers. It does follow the trend of last names as first and the current popularity of "x" names so no one has said a thing about his name.

@Mawgatron Do you have a Baxter?
I see it’s a zombie but I’m curious now.
Weirdly I’m coming around to surnames as first names. I know MN hates them.

Absolutely a dog's name. In my head, a West Highland Terrier....

but isn't a baxter a a female baker? From Bake+ster

anyways, I think people should pick name without telling anyone, my worry will be - would people tell bad stuff behind my back - which would still bother me.

when it comes to zombie threads, I don't mind them... they sometimes offer nicer insights, like that Hermione thread 10 years ago that got necromanced few weeks back.

I really like Rudy and love Walt(er). I’m turned off Baxter because I feel it will be shortened to Bax, which just makes me picture a physiotherapy practise I used to attend. ‘Pax’ has the same issue I guess (backs and packs) but I like the meaning ‘peace’.

Ffs! This came up in "Threads I'm On", I thought I was going crazy as I had no memory of it.

I posted on it in 2013 with a completely different name!
