Baby names

We really love the name Baxter

But have stupidly told people who keep trying to convince us otherwise.
We said we loved it before we were even trying for a baby (watched the Ian drury film and when we heard he had named his son that we both thought it was a brilliant and unusual name), and now we are 5 months pregnant we are starting to doubt ourselves. Everyone keeps saying 'its a dogs name' or 'that's a soup'.
But we still love it! Should we stick to our guns or cave to pressure?
He would be Baxter Sturge if that helps your judgement in any way?

Bertrand?

(Trying to think of old man names that go with Sturge!)

What about Daxter? I know of one of those. Not as dog like.

Report
PandaWatch · 18/02/2013 12:12

Surely Daxter is a made up name?

I think its dutch. Certainly the one I know has family in Holland.

Baxter is my maiden name, and I think it would make a lovely first name, and would be a good way to keep the name in the family (only have sisters) but DH has vetoed it, and I can see the point with us, as it would mess up young Baxter's bank security question!

It's reasonably well used as a first name in America... Oh and I didn't get called soup much as a child!

You shouldn't use your real mmn as a security answer. It's very easy for anyone to find that out, so you should use a different name (making sure you will remember it!).

My brother's name is Mum's maiden surname. He's managed to successfully circumnavigate banks' security questions by simply using ... another security question. Wink

The point is that the bank doesn't know your mmn, and you don't have to use the true one. It's an outdated password system which was fine in pre-internet days, as very few people would have known your mmn. Nowadays this info is readily available online. Unlike, for instance, the name of your first pet, or your first car.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I love Baxter! I'd chuck a neat little middle name in, like James or something. If he hates it he can use that in future and it would break up the ster-stur thing (which isn't that awful). I can just imagine a Baxter as a teen or an adult, definitely.

Soup related nicknames? Really? If that's the worst you can come up with, he'll be fine :)

Although Barnaby is also lovely :)

Rudy Sturge has a ring to it.

Baxter Sturge - no no no.

Baxster Sturge.

Say it to yourself a few times

SterSturge bit sounds absurd.

Walter Sturge sounds much better.

Baxter is the dog in Anchorman who gets punted over a bridge by Jack Black.

Awful name, IMO.

Good point, onlymeee!

I get 'bastard urge' when I say Baxter Sturge. OP, could you marry someone with an easier surname? Grin

Not got a problem with it myself, if you love it keep it, people always have an opinion whatever you choose.

@Mawgatron I know this thread is 9 years old but just wondering did you go with it and name your ds Baxter op? I like it. Came across this thread whilst helping a pregnant friend find a name for her ds soon to be born. I suggested it as an alternative to Dexter.

I like it but it does not go with your surname unfortunately. Barnaby Sturge is much much better

Call your son the name you love - as long as it’s not embarrassing .
People have dogs called Jack , Jess , Ben , Gemma , Holly , Lily , Charlie , Henry , Sallie , Rufus , Toby that I know . No one says Ben or Jack is a dog’s name , don’t use it for a baby .
But don’t tell anyone before the birth . People offer completely irrelevant personal opinions . I really regretted telling my family what we were calling my eldest (perfectly nice name , nothing weird ) as they felt we wanted to know what they thought 🤷🏻‍♀️
Your baby will own his name within days and people will forget they ever thought anything .

I love it! I also love Dexter and Jasper though which are both “dog” names.

It's soup.

And btw It's Ian DURY. Not 'Drury'.
