Like Isla but not...

We're looking for both boy and girl names (don't know yet) and want them to be Scottish but not overtly gaelic spelling.

I LOVE Isla but a v. good friend has just taken that. I also love Mairi but another friend has that.. Think I like Calum and Cameron for boys...

So... what's like Isla but not?

So far I can only think of Ailsa.

Iona?
Eilidh?

badguider · 14/02/2013 14:41

oooohhh... Iona's a good one Grin

Eilidh is bordering on the gaelic for me... but probably just the right side of ok. We're from east scotland and don't have any gaelic heritage at all but i do know gaelic speakers so i feel a bit weird choosing a gaelic name.

I'm a West Coaster, but not from the isles or anything and not a Gaelic speaker. We live in London and wanted distinctly Scottish names for the DC's, but not Gaelic names for obvious difficulty-of-pronunciation reasons, so know where you're coming from.

I still like Catriona (kat-rina) and Elspeth, but neither are going to be in the top 100 at the moment.

badguider · 14/02/2013 15:02

I'm not sure about Catriona as some people do say it Cat-ree-ona which is a bit odd.
Elspeth is quite nice for a little girl and adult but I'm not sure about a baby/toddler.

There's Aileen too (but worried people might confuse it with Eileen).
I like Skye for a girl but DH would find it too hippy Grin

Came on to say Iona but everyone else has Grin

However... you cannot use it if your surname is a noun.

amck5700 · 14/02/2013 15:51

have to be careful with Isla too BalloonSlayer - someone with the surname Harris was considering Isla. :)

badguider · 14/02/2013 15:55

Haha... hadn't tought of Iona as 'I own a...' DHs surname is a noun in scots but it is a nice thing to own :)

Lots of food for thought here... LOADS of these names are people we already know well (obviously, as they're from where we're from) but there definite options here..
I also like Sandy for a boy, but not sure if I'd feel we needed to put Alexander on the birth cert.
