Honest opinions wanted on "football" related boys name!!

Hi everyone!

So I've got 10 weeks until I'll be sectioned with yellow bundle no.2. Girl's name is sorted but have absolutely struggled with a boys name that I don't just "like".
While trying to get some imagination or inspiration from OH, I suggested looking at the names of footballing legends of his favourite team (Spurs).

Jurgen (Klinnsman) is out, and then he suggested Ossie (or Ozzie), and I kind of think I love it?! It's definitely a grower and goes well with DS's name and our
surname.

Am I mad? My husband will be seen as a legend amongst his friends for managing to convince me to name our child after a footballing hero!!

Defo the Ossie spelling, cool as fuck. Mama if you love this name you gotta have it, in fact I'm tipping Ossie to be the next big hipster baby name, bet you a million £ it catches on, you heard it here first

My honest opinion isn't positive.

But I really hate nicknames without the backup of a fuller name.

Ossie I would pronounce as spelt, with -ss- not -z- sound in the middle. Even leaving aside the nicknameyness, it's a name that will attract confusion.

I think that given the chavvy culture of Tatiana-Rose-Lees and India-Lampshade-Insertcountryhere names, Ossie is quite mild in comparison! I don't like the idea of a name that can be shortened, partly because my husband is known by lots of variations of the same name by different circles of friends and I think it's a bit schizophrenic. Bootsy.....I might even change MY name to Ossie by deed poll, I love it so frickin much.

I like it, fits into my preferred "different enough to be the only one but not so different that people say "what" when you tell them it"

One potential problem though, is if you spell it Ossie then I think he will forever be correcting people who pronounce it "Oh-sea" rather than the intended "oz" sound. I would probably go for the Ozzie spelling as I also think Z is a stronger letter and makes the name more powerful. That sounds daft but I am a big believer in how names look as well as sound.

PS - don't tell friends / family your chosen name before the baby is born, people think that if its not born yet then they are ok to criticise your name choice, once its named most keep schtum!

I get ya TerrysNo2, constructive criticism, I like it and do agree to a certain extent. The "Z" is definitely a more masculine consonant. Although I do think I'd prefer to be explaining that it's actually after the Argentinian footballer, hence the "ss" than for people to assume it's after recovering alcoholic, budgie-biter, and wife-strangler Osbourne!

I would just assume that you named his Ossie after that Osborne character.

But it's a nice name I think.

I think the fact that you are defending the name so fiercely means you should go for it! I think the most important thing about a name it you should love it and then use it and leave it at that and not ask forums for honest opinions

I also don't usually agree with naming a child Oscar if he will be known as Ozzie/Ossie for instance but in this case I would, he might never get used to this name and might want something more sensible on his CV.

I am sure you can at least admit it's a risky name

You and your DH really, really like the name, and it's a nice name, so I would go for it.

It wouldn't occur to me to pronounce Ossie Os sea, sod the confusion should only need explaining once, whatever your name is it's gonna get spelt wrong at some point, it's no big deal. Lets be honest most names can be linked to a famous person does anyone hear Joseph and say "ooooh Stalin or Fritzl?"

FWIW, I feel strongly about naming a child because I had to deal with a lot of horrendous teasing because of my name.

Remember you are really naming an adult not a baby or a dog.

In the grand scheme of things I don't think Ossie's that "out there" at all, it's original but not ridiculous. Everyone gets teased at some point, character building! Dragon I'm sorry you were teased horrendously about your name but if you had a normal run of the mill name you'd have been teased over something else.

You could try 'Oisin', or the Welsh version Osian.

Or, like, Osric, Oswin, um... Osiris? Osama?

DS has an Irish/Gaelic name so Oisin would go well, but it is VERY popular (here anyway) so that kind of rules it out for me. I'm with Bootsy on the teasing, I've a very "normal" name but still got teased as a child. I think it's part of growing up. I wouldn't purposely choose a name that I thought would make my child a target for bullies, and certainly don't think that Ossie is so wacky that it'd draw attention.

Not keen, personally. It's quite a common name round here (SE England) but usually short for Oscar.

My other thought was Austin - that is often shortened to Ossie/Ozzy and is Irish as well (?)

Ds has a friend called osbourne.... Nn is os ( said oz) short step to ossie. He is 10 and very cool
