Honest opinions wanted on "football" related boys name!!

Hi everyone!

So I've got 10 weeks until I'll be sectioned with yellow bundle no.2. Girl's name is sorted but have absolutely struggled with a boys name that I don't just "like".
While trying to get some imagination or inspiration from OH, I suggested looking at the names of footballing legends of his favourite team (Spurs).

Jurgen (Klinnsman) is out, and then he suggested Ossie (or Ozzie), and I kind of think I love it?! It's definitely a grower and goes well with DS's name and our
surname.

Am I mad? My husband will be seen as a legend amongst his friends for managing to convince me to name our child after a footballing hero!!

Oh and no matter what you call him (if it turns out to be a him!) his mates will give him a nickname, if it's not a shortening of his name it will be something else - so the way I look at is, you might as well choose something you like the 'nickname' of! Do you like Os?

Well, if you love it, go for it. There are a lot worse names out there! However, if you are asking for honest opinions - then I'd have to say I don't like it - I'd want to keep saying Aussi Aussi Aussi Oi Oi Oi or it would remind me of Ozzy Osborne. Neither of which are 'nice'. Come on - you can do better :)

It would make me think of Ozzy Osbourne which probably isn't the best connotation, sorry!

Sassee, Ledley was a suggestion which I politely refused, not that I'm questioning his talents or anything, just that I wouldn't call my own child Ledley. He also suggested "Gareth", or simply "Bale" (WTF?).

Oh good god, I've never been so pleased my DP is not on mn!

My blue bump is due in 9 weeks and is currently referred to by DP as Ledley, finest defender of his generation apparently!

As a kid on a city farm he helped with the birthing of a lamb, and named it Glen Hoddle, a girl sheep!

In saying that I think even I could be persuaded by Ossie, must be hormonal!

Hmm, I quite like Austin nn Ossie/Aussie.

germyrabbit · 12/02/2013 07:51

ossie sounds like a muppet, poor kid would be laughed at. also reminds me of ozzy osbourne.

people would also be forever going 'ozzy ozzy ozzy'

I know of a 2 (or 3?) YO Ozzie. Actual name.

It's been done.

Ds has a friend called osbourne.... Nn is os ( said oz) short step to ossie. He is 10 and very cool

Report
simplesusan · 11/02/2013 23:48

I would go for it although agree that people will automatically spell it Ozzie.

Report
amck5700 · 11/02/2013 23:27

I was going to say Osian too.

My other thought was Austin - that is often shortened to Ossie/Ozzy and is Irish as well (?)

Report
MERLYPUSS · 11/02/2013 16:26

Dunno. I think it would get shortened to Oz - as in that piss head wine buff.

Rhubarbgarden · 11/02/2013 16:23

Not keen, personally. It's quite a common name round here (SE England) but usually short for Oscar.

Report
Narked · 11/02/2013 16:12

A Northern Irish Spurs fan? OK

Surely the only name you could consider ATM would be Gareth.

MamaM22 · 11/02/2013 16:03

DS has an Irish/Gaelic name so Oisin would go well, but it is VERY popular (here anyway) so that kind of rules it out for me. I'm with Bootsy on the teasing, I've a very "normal" name but still got teased as a child. I think it's part of growing up. I wouldn't purposely choose a name that I thought would make my child a target for bullies, and certainly don't think that Ossie is so wacky that it'd draw attention.

I know a bloke called Ian, named so because his mum hated nicknames, his mates called him E Grin

Report
badtime · 11/02/2013 15:55

You could try 'Oisin', or the Welsh version Osian.

Or, like, Osric, Oswin, um... Osiris? Osama?

(I don't really like 'nickname' names)

bootsycollins · 11/02/2013 15:51

In the grand scheme of things I don't think Ossie's that "out there" at all, it's original but not ridiculous. Everyone gets teased at some point, character building! Dragon I'm sorry you were teased horrendously about your name but if you had a normal run of the mill name you'd have been teased over something else.

NotADragonOfSoup · 11/02/2013 15:36

FWIW, I feel strongly about naming a child because I had to deal with a lot of horrendous teasing because of my name.

Remember you are really naming an adult not a baby or a dog.

Oh Jeebus, Bootsy! I really did LOL, and bladder control is not one of my strongest points at this stage of pregnancy! Fritzl!!!

You asked for honest opinions - of course people will come across as feeling strongly about it - what did you expect? Confused

I don't like the idea of a name that can be shortened

That's Ossie out then as he will become Oz. Wink

Report
bootsycollins · 11/02/2013 15:28

It wouldn't occur to me to pronounce Ossie Os sea, sod the confusion should only need explaining once, whatever your name is it's gonna get spelt wrong at some point, it's no big deal. Lets be honest most names can be linked to a famous person does anyone hear Joseph and say "ooooh Stalin or Fritzl?" Confused

No No not you mama, someone upthread said if you didn't like Oscar call him Oswald. I know you have no intention of doing so!

You and your DH really, really like the name, and it's a nice name, so I would go for it.

Report
MortifiedAdams · 11/02/2013 15:26

I like Ozzie, not Ossie, but would use Oscar.

Report
MamaM22 · 11/02/2013 15:25

I wouldn't say I'm defending it fiercely, it's all a bit tongue-in-cheek, I think it's funny that other people have such strong opinions! I asked for honest opinions because I really do want to know what people think.

Different? Maybe. Risky? Nah.
