Baby names

Names you secretly like but could never burden a child with?

Was talking baby names with my husband yesterday and he admitted to wanting to name a son Aubrey. When I stopped laughing he agreed that it might lead to a little bit of bullying. But then I love
Evelyn (for a boy!) which is equally bad...

Have you or your DP got a secret soft spot for a name that might not go down so well in the playground?

Again Otto and Fabian are lovely and while not exactly mainstream aren't ridiculious and in my opinion not burdensome on a child. At first i wasn't too keen on Aubrey but after rereading this thread a few times it's really growing on me.

Oh I love Aubrey, I have an uncle named Aubrey. All good.

At the end of the day, if they're not teased about their name, they'll most likely get teased about something else, and I think it just makes them tougher of character to be able to laugh it off & deal with it Smile

My sis and I have a running joke that we always suggest Forbes to any friend who falls pregnant (as well as batting it back & forth to each other whenever we've been pregnant). So far nobody has been brave enough to go for it.

I did like Sofian for a boy when I was last pregnant, but didn't go for it in the end. I suppose partly due to the worry about teasing if I'm honest, but also I just had another name I preferred (which he'll get massively teased about I'm sure, but I'll just have to hope he can deal with it).

Dexter-love it. Not sure if it's cool or not. It could make you think of Dexter's laboratory or the serial killer Dexter-those prob aren't great for a kid. But still I love it. When I think of it I imagine a really boisterous little guy. Grin

Temperance. During my last pregnancy I posted it here in this forum as an option vs. Amelia. I got so badly flamed with the nastiest remarks... I decided against it, not for fear about what the kids on the playground might say... more worried about their mummies to be honest!

Apparently, a name meaning "moderation or self restraint" is as bad as calling your kid "Chlamydia"

I still might give it as a second name if I have another daughter.

Peter Rabbit.

It wouldn't be too cruel, would it? He could tell everyone his middle name was Richard, he wouldn't hate me too much, would he?

Abra loved it since I watched East of Eden as a pre-teen but the inevitable abracadabra makes it unusable.

Minerva. We were this >< close to calling DD1 it but chickened out. DH wanted Thorold for a boy but luckily we never had to have the conversation (we are not in any way nordic which is the only way that could be ok imo).

Though now I look at Minerva and Thorold they seem fine. Maybe not both.

We already have an odd surname, so didn't want to burden DS with an unusual first name too!

Salome.

It's just a no really isn't it.

I thought Aubrey is traditionally a male name, variation of Oberon, king of the fairies? Or am I thinking of a different name?

If DS was a girl I wanted to call him Tatiana. It was 25 years ago. MIL vetoed it as she said the poor child would be nick named Tatty.

At the moment I have a penchant for Ferdinand (Ferdie) for a boy and Sidonie or Sydney for a girl. Ha- there's no chance of me having any more DCs so I can be as fanciful as I like.

I wanted Ptolomy for both my ds but dh vetoed it :(

I also quite fancied jethro as a second name for ds2 but that got knocked back too - not sure how but we ended up with Edward which isn't a name I thought I'd ever use for a child; I didn't particularly like it when dh suggested it and I still dont. It's not a bad name, it's fine for other people but just one I'd never choose myself. And yet somehow my choice of names got vetoed because they're not particularly common but dh's boring choice got used. Not sure how that happened and still don't like the fact it happened.

I really really wanted to call my ds Seth but it was vetoed.

He's Joseph. I am very tempted to start calling him Seph.

I would also have loved to call dd phine but was vetoed again.
