unusual celtic/ gaelic boys names?

AlphaBeta2012 · 14/01/2013 18:41

Been asking about girls names but after scan today, our son decided he wasn't shy in showing gender and even to the untrained eye it was obvious we were having a little boy. [Smile]

So here goes for names and peoples honest views. We do like unusual names with nature type meanings and like old english or celtic style. These are our suggestions so far...
Quinlan nn quinn
Tarian nn tarry
Tarryn
Soren
Roan
Rohan

Ds1 is called iden. Other suggestions welcome!

Oh what a beautiful list! Love all of them, especially Tarian Smile Maybe just wait and see which one he suits best when he arrives Grin

AlphaBeta2012 · 14/01/2013 20:41

Thanks, thats the plan, love tarrian but it appears to be debatable between being used as a girls or boys name and not popular enough for me to fiure out which is right/ most popular!

AlphaBeta2012 · 15/01/2013 09:30

Thank you for the suggestions Love Torran, Tiernan, Adair etc! We had a similar list with DS1 and when he was born his just seemed right, so hoping the same happens again!

I met an Irishman called (and I'm sure it isn't spelled this way) Trailoch which I thought was very handsome. I don't like Seamus because it is very similar to the Italian word for idiot.

Turlough
Donal
Diarmuid
Fionn
Oran
Cormac

Ooh Pixie I came on here to say Adair too - DH vetoed it but I still love it!

amck5700 · 16/01/2013 18:22

Struan?

FoofFighter · 16/01/2013 19:24

I love Struan :)

How about Nairn? Lachlan? Ruiaridh?

Anjou · 16/01/2013 20:19

I was going to suggest Struan too!

Someone has already suggested Osian, which I believe is the Irish version and is pronounced 'Osheen'. There is also the Scottish version, Ossian, which (again, I believe) is pronounced as spelt. I think both are lovely.

'unusual' can vary depending on where you are and who you know, I guess. These links may provide inspiration, although they feature the 'Top' names, so might not be quite what you're after.

Congratulation, by the way! Smile

mathanxiety · 17/01/2013 02:41

I don't see much by way of Celtic or Gaelic names in your list. There is really no such language as Celtic.

The Irish version of Osian (a late 19th C transliteration) would be Oisín, mostly pronounced Usheen.

How about:

Fintan
Finbar
Fergus
Ferdia
Fiachra
Setanta
Finn
Donagh
Rory/Ruairi
Brendan
Declan
Lorcan
Colm
Donal
Cormac
Murtagh

(all Irish but not necessarily in Irish)

AlphaBeta2012 · 17/01/2013 10:50

Thanks Mathan apart from Soren, they all came from a book called Celtic and Gaelic Baby Names (or something like that). but I am not an expert so how seriously they take that I am not sure! However they are all names we like.

I especailly like Colm out of your list! Thank you

I love Lachlan as well but DH has said no to that one.
Thank you for the links Anjou
