paranoid that nobody likes the names of my children

i had my second child 5 weeks ago and have given them a name i really love, but im beginning to get paranoid that people dont like it, nobody has been rude enough to say it to my face but ive had the line 'oh that's different/unusual' a bit (which it isnt) so im gunna put it to the test if i can and ask you to tell me what names you LOVE or HATE or even what you LIKE or DISLIKE from the lists below (the other names are friends/family)

dont know if i'd be more upset if people said they hated it or if it wasnt mentioned at all, lol!

here are the names:-

GIRLS:- sophie, kiera, ruby, elin, bethan, erin, seren, brooke, maisie, mollie, haylie, layla, jasmine.

BOYS:- joseph, flynn, jack, arthur, rhys, robbie, henry, ellis, toby, oliver, jacob, james, dylan, alfie, logan.

Congratulations on your DD! And you gave her a name you really love... that's as good as anyone does.

If you've mooched around this board any length of time you will know just how different everyone's taste is regarding names. And this is a (moderately) random group of people. Even within my circle of friends and family there's such a range of names that I personally like and don't like so much, that I would or wouldn't of chosen. But it makes not a whit of difference to how I see them as parents or how I get on with their DCs.

I know sometimes that I feel a bit defensive about the name of my DD, and probably will about the name of my DC to come, both of which are/will be moderately on the different/unusual scale. But though it's nice to think of yourself as someone who choses good names for your DC (and how differently we all define 'good' ha ha), almost every other aspect of being a parent is more important!

But why on earth SHOULD we expect everyone else to share OUR tastes?! Thankfully we all have different tastes and choose different names for our children. The more names there are, the easier life becomes and also the more interesting!

If it's any consolation, my DC4 has an obvious Marmite name. I got a lot of "Oh " and one (marvellous) 'HA Really? Ha ' Now he's older, it's just him - no one I meet now makes any comment at all. It's as if it's easier to pass judgment comment on a newborn who has just been assigned a name, than a 'proper' child who just becomes that name.

I think you are overthinking. It doesn't matter.

Agree - why does it matter what us random internetters think of YOUR childrens' names. Thankfully we all have different tastes - you might dislike my kids' names!

But ok, here are the names I like (although I don't love any) - Sophie, Erin, Joseph and Henry.
And here are the names I dislike - Kiera, Ruby, Brooke, Maisie, Mollie, Maisie, Haylie, Layla, Jasmine, Robbie, Toby, Alfie and Logan.

Personally the only name I'm not keen on is Maisie, and that's only because meisie (pronounced similarly) means girl in Dutch/Afrikaans.

The really important thing is that you like the names. They're your kids, as long as you're not calling them something ridiculous like Optimus Prime or Toilet Duck, who cares what other people think? :)

It doesn't matter what we think! You've made your choice and you say you 'really love' it. They'll get used to it!

They're all great names. You didn't include Spliffany in your list, or Dolt. Two names that may understandably make eyes roll a little.

Everyone else can bugger off, they are your DC, and you love their names.

I think all of them are fine.

Some I wouldn't choose like Haylie and Brooke, but don't have a strong response to other people choosing the name they like.

Nobody can pronounce first time, let alone spell my kids names and I don't give a monkey's because we chose them and they have meaning to us (and not close to toilet duck!)

i know it doesnt matter what people think and i do love the names ive chosen, but its nice to get an unbiased, honest opinion on what people think, its interesting to see that people generally seem to think its a nice name and my eldest has come under fire a lot more for his name choice (which in real life is generally really liked)

Imagine if we all loved the same names and everyone was named, say, Jack and Sophie, for example...! Life would be really dull and very confusing!

Name variety is a good thing so thank goodness we have different tastes!

I don't think any of those names are particularly different/unusual, they're all perfectly normal :)

Is Toilet Duck for a girl or a boy?
