The person who is thinking about it when her son is born has a 16yr old daughter named Brooklyn.

I personally think it's too much (she doesn't mind me posting on here) any other suggestions you may have?

My friend is quite Unconventional.

Well if she's unconventional she won't give a rats ass that most people will think she's a pillock copying the likes of the Beckhams and their 'sleb' mates. It's dire as a name, sorry.

I think it's unimaginative. Why not urge her to go for a less expected place name, like Bingley, or Leamington?

Is this on the Beckham principle of being called after where you were conceived? In which case London sounds a bit boring but I suppose unavoidable if the deed is already done. Suggest they go to Goa or maybe Pyongyang for the next one.

It's the name of a very very stupid girl on one of those incredibly tedious Disney channel programmes, the one with the odious twins in it.

Perhaps you could buy "The Meaning of Liff" for your unconventional friend because there are some wonderful definitions of place names in there.

As a place of conception 'London' is a bit non-specific.

Can she not call him Bermondsey, or Deptford, or Hornsey Rise, or whatever? PallMall? or even N159, dependng on which night bus route...

Yes, it's too general and bland. London is not equivalent to Brooklyn, Brooklyn is a borough of New York City. So she should call him, say, Southwark. Or City of Westminster. I used to know a woman called Lambeth actually.

How about Bromley? I can sort of imagine the hero of a Victorian novel being called Bromley. But not Croydon, for some reason.
