I heard a woman in the park calling her little girl Madge. I haven't heard that name in years and years. I also know of a little toddler called Sheila.

Just wondering if any of you know any children with names that you thought had died out completely.

My ds is called Sid Smile

almapudden · 09/01/2013 15:29

I teach a Colin, Simon and Alan.

5madthings · 09/01/2013 15:34

I know a little Agatha :) I think its lovely.

Tbh many of the names mentioned here don't seem retro/dated.

Oscar certainly isn't, ditto George, Eliza and Jemima etc fairly normal names nowadays.

Selks · 09/01/2013 15:35

I know a toddler Ray, a four year old Sarah (both of which I like actually) and someone I know is considering calling her baby when it is born, if it's a girl, Janet, which I've never liked (sorry Janets out there).

memphis83 · 09/01/2013 15:37

My friend has just had an Arthur.
Also met a Jeremy and a girl called Sidney.

I love the names Ron and Ralph (obviously not together)

ellangirl · 09/01/2013 15:40

I have a bridget, and know a baby Bruce. Know a little Ian too. All brilliant names in my very humble opinion.

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 09/01/2013 15:42

Also children not babies calle d Bruce and Donald. I love these but seeing as how some people (upthread) are still describing Ruby as retro, Ican see why most people wouldn't.

Most of the names here are mainstream now.eg Stanley! fgs, who doesn't know a child called Stanley. My eldest is ten and most of the names on my list ten years ago have been mentioned on this thread.

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 09/01/2013 15:42

wow snap with the Bruce!

Revival for Bruce??

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/01/2013 15:45

OK, what's the youngest Gaynor you know?

PrunellaDeVille · 09/01/2013 15:47

I know a baby named Deidre, seriously. Also i have a 5 week old Claude i often get Hmm looks and the odd lightly disguised Confused

Alma for some reason that made me roar! Who one earth calls a baby Alan? Dads including mine are called Alan!

spudmurphy · 09/01/2013 15:48

Elsie
Colette

Keepcalmandpassthewine · 09/01/2013 15:49

My DS had a Barbara in his class

spudmurphy · 09/01/2013 15:49

A name like Gladys do you mean- and no i haven't heard of any baby called Gladys lately

FlouryWhiteBaps · 09/01/2013 15:51

Colette is rather nice!

almapudden · 09/01/2013 15:52

Ariel - it suits him!

atthewelles · 09/01/2013 15:52

I love the name Janet. But I suppose in Ireland it wouldn't have been a popular name fifty or sixty years ago so it doesn't have any mumsy connotations for me.

I agree some of the names mentioned aren't really that dated or retro anymore eg Oscar, Elsie, Eliza. I suppose, in my OP, I was thinking more of some of the other names mentioned like Marilyn, Frank, Valerie and Ralph.

Jesus wept- MADGE !!!!!

FlouryWhiteBaps · 09/01/2013 15:55

But Deirdre Shock. If that's in Britain I bet every adult who meets the baby mentally adds 'Barlow' on to her name without even thinking about it Grin.

atthewelles · 09/01/2013 15:57

Whereas her in Ireland Deirdre would be the Irish equivalent of Melanie, Debbie or Jackie. Totally dates you back to the sixties or seventies.

orangepudding · 09/01/2013 15:58

I know a Kevin, David, Bruce and Sarah. None unusal for people over 30 but not very widely used for babies now.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/01/2013 15:58

Me, I don't know anyone under 75 called Stanley! Doesn't it depend on where you live?

EbbNFlow · 09/01/2013 15:59

Madge has given me a good giggle.

There is a Percy in DD's class. Also know of baby girls born recently called Valerie, Pru and Hilda.

Bearface · 09/01/2013 16:02

I know a baby called Herbert and he's adorable.

I also know a Stanley, a Susannah and a Nellie who all suit their names very well.

I like retro names. The only ones I don't like are Deirdre for reasons already mentioned and Brenda as it makes me think of boobs. My friends at school always used the term 'brendas' for boobs.

atthewelles · 09/01/2013 16:05

Susannah is lovely. A colleague called his daughter that about four years ago. Nellie is awful but I like Nell.
