She asked for "White British" but no Welsh or Scottish. Curiouser and curiouser.

I think some people are reading too much in the comment 'white British' - I dont think this automatically means the person dislikes people of other races which appears to be the way some people are taking it?

There have been plenty of threads were the OP has been very excact about the racial/religious origins of the family and I dont recall anyone exclaiming how awful to be only asking for names that work for say Muslim or Irish backgrounds.

if the Op had said Black British or Chinese British would they have the same reaction?

OP - I'd brush such responses off if I were you

Report
amck5700 · 08/01/2013 18:11

I think the reaction was that she had said white British when in fact she didn't want any Scottish or Welsh names, so actually she wanted white English - no-one was reacting to the white, it was that the OP did the classic media thing of referring to Britain when they mean England.

You are correct though in that she did not say she disliked Scottish or Welsh people (or any other races/colours etc), just the names.

From my experience, people from the rest of Britain get a bit hacked off when things are quoted as being British (i.e. quoted statistics etc) when actually they only cover England - it's a bit of a raw nerve. A bit like Andy Murray being referred to as Scottish when he loses but British when he wins.

No, Spanishlady, but 'WhiteBritish' haven't grown up with the prejudice and abuse that 'BlackBritish' have had to endure over the centuries.

No, Spanishlady, but 'WhiteBritish' haven't grown up with the prejudice and abuse that 'BlackBritish' have had to endure over the centuries.

so, you are saying that people of certain ethnic backgrounds have some kind of special pass when it comes to racial matters? Perhaps they own racism? Because no one is ever racist to say white people....odd seeing as Im white and have had been racially abused a number of times (including being spat on and refused service) bothoverseas and interestingly in the UK.

I think racism is racism no matter whose mouth it comes out and its never ok whatever historic precedent you are claiming as your own.

Anyway I didnt mean this to become a discussion on race - but if you look back at the original post:

  • at no point did she say she only wanted white or English names - that is just what she is - so roseforme I think your post a little unrepresentative of the OP

  • whilst of course I cant speak for the OP what I took from the reference to no celtic names was she wouldnt want names that are extremely obviously 'celtic' - eg Myfanwy, or Padraig - I can see how that might upset people who like those names but seriously? look at some posts on here - you get people saying some pretty derogatory things about some names - its just opinion not fact

-at no point did OP say she didnt like foreign names - so I dont know why some of you are mocking her for her son's Greek name - she never said she had a problem with Non- British names! And whilst Lysander may be Greek in origin it is well known in the UK and more well in English in terms of pronounciation etc

  • I also dont get the Xander comment - I am more than happy to accept Xander is scottish though I am also convinced that a straw poll in the street would not have the majority of people identifying it as Scottish - it sounds pretty generic to me - Hamish? Elspeth? yes Scottish. Xander? well ok but not as obviously as other names

I dont usually post to be honest but I think some of you have been pretty unkind and basically incorrect about the OP because she has somehow upset your sensibilities when I think she was pretty quick to try and soothe over any such perception - yet you carried on? Just dont think this was necessary.

That's a bit dubious - she said NB White British no Welsh or Scottish names - She could have been referring to her own nationality rather than that being the type of name she wanted but when you add on the names she didn't want then that effectively means White English names in my book.

As a said before, I think it was badly worded and touched a raw nerve - but it is something that people more in the public eye than the OP do all the time. I don't think that anyone would have been bothered if she's said she'd like a Traditional English name to go with her son called Lysander. Maybe someone would have commented that as Lysander is a greek name would she be interested in similar but that would have been all.

That said, i don't think anyone has been particularly unkind, the OP could have come back and done an "oops" type of response. Lots of people have posted helpful suggestions and if nothing else the OP will have been educated in the geography of Britain and the roots of her son's name. :o

Your post makes me very sad, Spanishlady. What a very narrow minded, ignorant view of the world you have. I feel sorry for you.

Sorry OP, I realise we are going off topic.

Sad

I have seen so many threads where people say they like names like Bjorn, and are told they are silly if they're not Scandinavian. Lysander strikes me as "classical" rather than proper Greek eg Iannis, Vassos etc.

KatherinaMinola · 11/01/2013 10:38

What a bonkers thread. I took it that the OP was saying that her family was White British (a helpful note so that she would get suggestions that were culturally appropriate), with an additional note that she was not keen on Welsh/Scottish names.

I love the names Seren and Angharad, but sadly they are not culturally appropriate for my family...

As has been said, Lysander is 'read' as classical rather than "Are you Greek then?"

This is really silly! For what it's worth I think the OP meant that they are white British (many people reference their nationality on here as it is relevant to naming traditions or choices) and then as a different point went on to say that she didn't want Celtic sounding names. Fair enough if that is a preference. That isn't racist. What if she didn't like flower names? Would everyone be up in arms that it discriminates against people with kids called Rose and Jasmine?! No.

Anyway.

KatherineMinola how can a name not be culturally appropriate...surely any name can be used if you like it can't it? Thinking along narrow cultural lines is one of the things that divides people unnecessarily isn't it? What a strange view of the world you must have.
