No, Spanishlady, but 'WhiteBritish' haven't grown up with the prejudice and abuse that 'BlackBritish' have had to endure over the centuries.
so, you are saying that people of certain ethnic backgrounds have some kind of special pass when it comes to racial matters? Perhaps they own racism? Because no one is ever racist to say white people....odd seeing as Im white and have had been racially abused a number of times (including being spat on and refused service) bothoverseas and interestingly in the UK.
I think racism is racism no matter whose mouth it comes out and its never ok whatever historic precedent you are claiming as your own.
Anyway I didnt mean this to become a discussion on race - but if you look back at the original post:
- at no point did she say she only wanted white or English names - that is just what she is - so roseforme I think your post a little unrepresentative of the OP
- whilst of course I cant speak for the OP what I took from the reference to no celtic names was she wouldnt want names that are extremely obviously 'celtic' - eg Myfanwy, or Padraig - I can see how that might upset people who like those names but seriously? look at some posts on here - you get people saying some pretty derogatory things about some names - its just opinion not fact
-at no point did OP say she didnt like foreign names - so I dont know why some of you are mocking her for her son's Greek name - she never said she had a problem with Non- British names! And whilst Lysander may be Greek in origin it is well known in the UK and more well in English in terms of pronounciation etc
- I also dont get the Xander comment - I am more than happy to accept Xander is scottish though I am also convinced that a straw poll in the street would not have the majority of people identifying it as Scottish - it sounds pretty generic to me - Hamish? Elspeth? yes Scottish. Xander? well ok but not as obviously as other names
I dont usually post to be honest but I think some of you have been pretty unkind and basically incorrect about the OP because she has somehow upset your sensibilities when I think she was pretty quick to try and soothe over any such perception - yet you carried on? Just dont think this was necessary.
