I'd continue with the Jilly cooper theme so Rupert, xavier, Cosmo, rannaldino, tabitha, perdita, oh so many

mynameis · 03/01/2013 19:46

Smile Also in the Jilly Cooper theme.
Aren't his brothers called Hector and Alexander in the book?

countrykitten · 03/01/2013 20:45

Hector is an hilarious name! It's a bit like Boris but nicer - I think Hector is actually a good choice AND it's staying with the Greek theme.

But to hector means to bully/to torment. Not a great association imo.

SpikyLikey · 03/01/2013 21:28

Lysander is lovely.

Lots of Hectors in Scotland - better not suggest that one.

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/01/2013 22:22

well I like Fabian and Raphael (nn Rafe) but then I would really Grin

countrykitten · 03/01/2013 22:49

Rose - that's interesting about Hector being popular in Scotland. Shame the OP won't be interested because of that as it is a good name.

Come to think of it - the brief is a little weird for this one isn't it?

FoxtrotFoxtrotSierra · 03/01/2013 22:52

Some talk of Alexander and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander and such great names as these

Love Hector a lot. Can you see it as Greek rather than Scottish OP?

Yes, Foxtrot, weird and (perhaps) a little racist. Not only no Welsh or Scottish but specifically White British. Surely, having names suggested that you do not like is hardly offensive while dismissing them based on country of origin or colour is a bit offensive.

amck5700 · 04/01/2013 17:09

yes I feel offended, and she hasn't come back either. I think she meant white English.....to go with her son's Greek name Hmm

Maybe she just put it badly and meant she likes traditional but unusual names?

Roseformeplease · 04/01/2013 17:12

Maybe she is hiding in case I set the boys in kilts on her?

lockets, lots of people have tried to help including those who were offended :)

Just because someone worded something badly, doesn't mean that the sentiment doesn't exist. However, I agree that if she had simply said that she'd like something along the same lines as Lysander then she would maybe have not been thought of as possibly racist - I was joking about being offended btw.....and yes, it would be a strange world if we all liked the same names but I don't think anyone would particularly give any Celtic suggestions with the original brief so all could have been avoided.

tetleymel · 04/01/2013 17:38

How is Xander a nick name for Lysander?

Electra was in love with her father, wasn't she? Like a female Oedipus?

Never seen so many pretentious names on one thread.

amck5700 · 04/01/2013 18:24

tetleymel - How is Xander a nick name for Lysander? It's not as I said above - you could have Sandy (very Scottish) or Zander at a push.

mynameis · 04/01/2013 18:28

I would go with Sandy being the shortened version too

Hmm - all down to accents I guess. Bit of a diversion, but I've noticed people from the Southern half of GB writing "draw" instead of "drawer" as apparently it sounds exactly the same. There is a whole syllable missing in my accent :)

countrykitten · 05/01/2013 16:31

I think that posters have been very helpful on this thread lockets. I think that maybe the OP has not come back as she is a bit embarrassed at asking for English names without realising that Lysander is Greek!! Suspect that she found it in a Jilly Cooper novel and thought that good old Jilly couldn't possibly use a foreign name....Grin
