only 8 days to go - Connor or Conrad??

due Dec 29th, have 2 boys already (Christian and Samuel). Picked out 2 girls names that we like (Merryn or Meredith) and are a bit stuck for boys names - have William, but suddenly thinking of Connor or Conrad? What do you think?? Is Conrad a bit 1920s communist comrade?! Connor was in top 25 boys names last year, Conrad doesn't feature, but yet is easy to spell etc.
Impartial advice required! TIA.

I like Conrad.

StrawberryMojito · 21/12/2012 19:36

Are you absolutely definite about having one of those names? I love both of your existing dc names and both of your girls choices but don't think either Conrad or Conor go with Christian and Samuel. At a push though, I would say Conor. Conrad is just a bit too harsh sounding.

PinkFairyTaleOfNewYork · 21/12/2012 19:37

Conrad Grin

VBisme · 21/12/2012 19:43

Conrad definitely, although I like William as well. Not very fond of Connor.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 21/12/2012 21:50

Conor , with one n

SleighbellsRingInYourLife · 21/12/2012 21:57

Conor

Greenwing · 21/12/2012 23:15

Conor is better - it is the real Irish name and with two ns it looks like a surname/American/not very upmarket.

Unfortunately both Conrad and Conor have the problem that 'con' is a really rude word in French meaning 'idiot' (but much stronger - more along the lines of 'dickhead' or 'twat') ... so don't plan any trips to France or send him on a French exchange trip as a teenager - my son suffered terrible teasing because we called him 'Con' for short. Xmas Sad I wish I had called him something different because we love going to France!

nooka · 22/12/2012 06:05

I prefer Conrad of the two, and like the sound of Conrad William but I'm not sure I'd use another 'C' name as you already have a Christian. The other way around I think William Conor sounds better than William Conrad.

peggyblackett · 22/12/2012 06:22

Conor

Worley · 22/12/2012 06:29

I have a teenage Connor.. we went for the double n spelling as I'd worked with an female Australian who was called Conor and told me that's how it was spelt for girls there... don't know how true that is never thought to google it at time (did we have google 15 yrs ago???)
I had a Conrad come for work experience and he was a toffy little sod so have a dislike for that name due to him..

I like both but tipping slightly to Conrad. Also like William.

We liked Connell and Conlan too.

Good luck on the new arrival :)

well, I mentioned to DH last night about coming round to Connor/Conrad, but it seems that he's a bit 'meh' about Connor now, and Conrad would infact have to be Konrad (he is german BTW), and I don't like Konrad for some reason, but will try it out. That would get round the two children with same initial (but would have same first initial as me), but I don't like it as much for some reason. I had no idea that Con was a 'bad word' in French, I suppose that I am getting off lightly - DH did seriously suggest Constantine (orperhaps that was Konstantin) for a boy, which gets shortened to Connie FGS. thanks for the comments - is useful to get some outside perspective!

Conrad is awesome. I know too many Conors for it to be appealing anymore. Sharing an initial with a sibling is not a reason to throw out a name you love. No rules here!

nooka · 23/12/2012 04:03

Konstantin sounds cool to me with the German connection.

Frikadellen · 23/12/2012 16:14

I have a Conrad and it is 100% a marmite name people either love it or hate it,

Personally I do not like Connor...and I find it is always the horrid lil brat spirited child.. I get REALLY irate when people call my Conrad for Connor.

Some statistics from the names in 2011 here

Of the two

(3 variations of Connor found)
Connor was 48th with 1471 named
Conor was 273rd with 165 named
Conner was 438th with 88 named

(2 variations of Conrad)
Conrad 578th with 61 named
Konrad 743rd with 42 named

Conrad is a classic name that is underused we know one other he is 41 now and says our Conrad is the only other he has met.

specialknickers · 23/12/2012 16:16

Definitely Conrad.

overtheseatocalais · 23/12/2012 16:32

Conrad. Cool, good for baby, toddler, child & adult. Goes much better than Conor/Connor with your children's lovely names.

blindworm · 23/12/2012 20:10

Connor/Conor definitely. If someone has a preconception of your child based on his name that's probably not the kind of person you want around him.

PlaySchool · 23/12/2012 20:18

Irish names are chavvy? Not if you are Irish.

Connor is a great name. It sounds friendlier than Conrad.

copyandpaste · 24/12/2012 03:33

I'm in the Connor fan club over here! (Also like the one n spelling!!) I think it's lovely and quite timeless, and personally think Conrad is not. Sounds pretentious to me, I think it's popularity will soon dwindle!

NervousReindeer · 24/12/2012 03:43

Connor

Good luck OP

KMR281 · 24/12/2012 17:44

Right, no baby as yet, but think we are going for William Konrad if it's a boy, and Merryn (no middle name, as will not name baby after MIL who is a witch) for a girl. Nearly certain...!

I like Conor best, not mad on Conrad. I am Irish myself and afaik Conor is the correct way to spell it, Connor is a surname ;)
