Harriet is the only one I really like

borisjohnsonshair · 28/11/2012 14:05

I only like these ones

Elsie

Elsie and Miriam were on my list for a girl (had a boy though).

And the only one I really don't like is Bonnie. To me it's the Blue Peter dog.

Julia
Hollie
Lucia

Those are the only ones I particularly like from the list. I also have one of them for my dd.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 28/11/2012 14:24

Would ceren be pronounced geran? If so I like that too.

RillaBlythe · 28/11/2012 14:24

Astrid, Nina, Susannah,

YouCanBe · 28/11/2012 14:31

I thought Leonie was my favourite for about a day, but really I am not sure yet at all!

I am glad that there aren't too many people coming on to say they hate 99% of them.

My favourites:
Elsie
Amy
Clara
Hayley
Rosalind
Katie
Gwen
Ailsa

Do you know what they all mean? For me that would make a big difference. The reason I like Amy so much is because of its meaning, loved. I don't know most of the others on your list, so I just picked what I like the sound of.

Also, several of these are originally nicknames - would you use them as they are or put the long form on the birth certificate so DD can use it when she's older? (e.g. Elsie/Betty = Elizabeth, Annie = Anna, Katie = Katherine). Kirsty didn't make it onto my shortlist but Kirsten might.

hatebeak · 28/11/2012 14:54

Leonie reminds me of that X factor winner (so a no) and she probably wouldn't thank you for calling her Gwen!

FellatioNelson · 28/11/2012 15:08

Bloody hell, that IS a long list!

Sylvie
Astrid
Sorcha
Clover
Hazel
Marnie
Julia (although I prefer Juliet)

there we are. Done.

FellatioNelson · 28/11/2012 15:09

Seren is getting very common popular indeed.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 28/11/2012 15:17

Is ceren pr geran?

YouCanBe · 28/11/2012 16:27

I don't know what they all mean yet no, it is something I'd think about, maybe once I have cut a few. My book doesn't say Miriam means bitter though incidentally.

I probably would put Elizabeth on the birth certificate for Betty etc. yes.

Seren is pronounced pretty much phonetically I guess!

I have never seen Marnie. Maybe I should in case it totally puts me off that name!

Marianne is lovely too TSC, it nearly went on my longlist but I decided I slightly preferred Miriam. I do like the short Mari though... Don't encourage me to add another one on!

Seren
Hazel
Cerys
Ailsa
Roisin

Um... That's it. There are many that aren't bad but just not ones I could term a favourite/top ten

MerryMarigold · 28/11/2012 17:10

My favs would be:
Astrid (nice and strong)
Julia (also strong and classy)
Nina (LOVE it - soooo cool, but classic)
Cerys (on my shortlist for dd)
Gwen (again super cool)
Miriam (one of my all time favs)
Susannah (like nn Susie as well)
Leonie (love it)

My dislikes:
Amy (I find it really sickly, like a pink dolly)
Harriet (too horsey)
Holly (too chav)
Rosalind (too posh)
Hayley (round here would become 'Highly' and is very council estate)
Katie (boring)
Natasha (meh)
Roisin (most people can't pronounce it in England, but nice if you are somewhere people know how to say it)
Nesta (isn't that a brand of curry?)
Betty (old lady un-chic)
Dorothy (ditto)

MerryMarigold · 28/11/2012 17:12

Now make an excel spreadsheet and get all the votes in. Any dislikes get a minus point!
