So we like the name Arthur but cant imagine it for a baby/toddler. Do you think the nickname Artie is really posh?

Arty farty.

But not posh, no.

Pancakeflipper · 26/11/2012 15:53

Depends on your accent. It won't sound posh oop North or areas like Dudley.

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 15:56

Do I take it from that that you don't like it Soup ?

No real accent to change the sound of it Pancake, my husband just thinks it's a bit posh!

MrsBungleBear · 26/11/2012 15:57

I don't think of it as posh. I think of it in terms the same as Alfie, Archie etc.

MistletoeAndTomHardyPlease · 26/11/2012 15:58

Depends, Artee sounds quite posh but round here it would be Art-tehh.

I like it.

SoupDragon · 26/11/2012 16:00

It's not that I don't like it per se, just that "arty farty" is the phrase that springs immediately to mind.

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 16:01

Would be pronounced Artee here!

My concern with Arthur would be people pronouncing it Arfur, could I just correct them every time or would that just look rude?!

MrsBungle does that mean common? As in popular?

OP posts:
MrsBungleBear · 26/11/2012 16:04

No, I don;t think common. I know a 3yo Arthur but he is the only one (and he is only called Arthur - not Artie).

IMHO I find Artie a bit twee but I like Arthur :)

Mu1berries · 26/11/2012 16:05

No. Definitely not. It is so self-consciously middle class it's embarrassing.

poozlepants · 26/11/2012 16:05

You're not Scottish then. Artie is one of the 'famous' children's entertainers round these parts in The Singing Kettle and posh isn't a word that would readily spring to mind.

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 16:08

Mu1berries what do you mean?

Poozle nope not Scottish! No children's entertainer here to put me off!

OP posts:
ConfusedandBemused · 26/11/2012 17:06

I think it is lovely!

tasmaniandevilchaser · 26/11/2012 17:19

I think it's sweet, just a shortening of Arthur, not especially posh. Not sure about "self consciously middle class", seems to be over thinking it a bit. I would put it in the same bracket as Alfie and Archie.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/11/2012 18:18

I'd say Art-ee.

I think it's really sweet, I knew a girl vaguely whose very cool boyfriend went by Art when I was a teenager. I don't think it's posh, more unusual in the sea of Alfie's about these days.

I love Arthur by the way OP Smile

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 18:21

Thankyou for the responses, glad to see it is generally well liked.

Am still confused at Mu1berries comment, can anyone explain?

2kidsintow · 26/11/2012 18:25

My Granddad was an Arthur. His name was shortened to Arch.

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop · 26/11/2012 22:38

I love Arthur, and Art for short. Not sure about Artie; it does rather put it in the Alfie/Archie camp which I am not keen on at all, sorry.

bananaramma · 26/11/2012 22:48

Would 'posh' be good or bad?

Personally I don't like Artie as it rhymes with Fartie but I don't understand the obsession with poshness Confused?

NoTeaForMe · 27/11/2012 16:18

It's not an obsession bananarama it was just a question! Some names are definitely posher than others...

OP posts:
Rhubarbgarden · 27/11/2012 20:26

It's a bit twee for me. I prefer Art. And I have to say, I kind of agree with Mu1berries about it being very MC.

Anonymumous · 27/11/2012 20:31

You have to be posh to get away with it, because if you send him to a state school he will inevitably end up being called Fartie.

bigbluebump · 27/11/2012 21:20

"if you send him to a state school he will inevitably end up being called Fartie"

Do you think private school children don't have the same imagination Grin?

Allalonenow · 27/11/2012 21:35

I really like Arthur, and Art or Artie are good diminutives. It is a super and historic name.
As for being made fun of in a state school, he will be in a class full of Zanders Winds Tempests Coyotes and Kestrels, so will have little to fear!

Ozziegirly · 28/11/2012 05:29

Arthur is my DS's middle name - we loved it for a first name (and it's a family name for DH and me) but we also assumed that he would be called Farty Arty and just couldn't inflict that.

meditrina · 28/11/2012 07:07

I don't think Artie is remotely 'posh'.
